San Francisco Unicorns produced a breathtaking batting display to chase down a challenging target of 191 with remarkable ease, defeating Washington Freedom by eight wickets in Match 15 of the Major League Cricket 2026 at the Oakland Coliseum. After Washington Freedom posted an imposing 190/4, the Unicorns responded with an aggressive top-order assault, reaching 193/2 in just 15.1 overs. Lhuan-dre Pretorius starred with a blistering 66 off 26 balls and was deservedly named Player of the Match for setting up one of the fastest successful chases of the tournament.

Andries Gous anchors Washington Freedom with sparkling 83

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Washington Freedom got off to a brisk start despite losing Steve Smith early for just three runs. Mitchell Owen ensured the momentum stayed with his side, smashing 39 off only 20 deliveries with three fours and three sixes before he was dismissed.

The innings truly belonged to wicketkeeper-batter Andries Gous, who anchored the batting effort with a superb 83 from 50 balls. Gous mixed controlled strokeplay with aggressive hitting, clearing the ropes seven times while also striking four boundaries. He found useful support from Mark Chapman, who contributed 17 off 13 balls, while Nikhil Chaudhary added valuable late acceleration with 32 from just 19 deliveries, including two fours and two sixes. Obus Pienaar remained unbeaten on 10 as Washington closed on a competitive 190/4.

San Francisco’s bowlers found it difficult to contain the scoring for most of the innings. Ghulam Mudassar was the most economical, claiming one wicket while conceding only 29 runs in his four overs. Matthew Short also made an impact with the ball, picking up a wicket for just 12 runs from two overs. Haris Rauf and Brody Couch chipped in with one wicket apiece, while Xavier Bartlett endured an expensive outing, leaking 50 runs from his four-over spell.

Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Allen blow the chase wide open

Any hopes Washington Freedom had of defending their total quickly disappeared as the San Francisco openers launched an extraordinary counterattack. Finn Allen wasted no time, hammering 45 off only 18 deliveries with four boundaries and four towering sixes, putting immediate pressure on the bowlers.

Pretorius then took over, producing a sensational innings that completely shifted the contest in San Francisco’s favour. The left-hander blasted 66 runs from just 26 balls, smashing seven sixes and three fours in a fearless display of power-hitting. His aggressive approach ensured the required run rate never became an issue as the Unicorns raced well ahead of the asking rate.

After the explosive opening stand, captain Matthew Short maintained the momentum with a composed 34 off 26 balls. Aaron Hardie finished the job in style, remaining unbeaten on 42 from just 22 deliveries, striking six fours and a six to guide his team comfortably across the finish line with 29 balls to spare.

Washington Freedom’s bowling attack struggled throughout the chase. Nikhil Chaudhary was the only bowler to show some control, returning figures of 1/29 from four overs. Marco Jansen claimed the other wicket, but frontline pacers Lockie Ferguson and Amila Aponso were taken apart, conceding 45 and 44 runs respectively as the Unicorns dominated from start to finish.
