Universal Pictures UK and Focus Features have released the first trailer for Robert Eggers’ upcoming horror film, Werwulf.
The film follows Aaron Taylor-Johnson in a nameless role as ancient legends transform into a horrifying reality in medieval Britain, and a group of villagers must confront this supernatural being. The film also stars Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson, all of whom featured in Eggers’ previous outing, his remake of the classic vampire tale, Nosferatu. The film has been written by Eggers and co-writer Sjón.
The trailer sees Eggers use the Academy aspect ratio of 1.37:1, with an incredibly grainy texture for its terrifying images. In a recent interview with Esquire, the American director talked about how they shot on 35mm, with black-and-white grain incorporated into colour film to achieve a unique look.
He went on to add that the characters speak in a dialect called Middle English, and that they consulted Oxford professors to gain a more accurate understanding of the time period and the pronunciations for his dialogue.
In the trailer, Eggers uses a mixture of what appears to be black-and-white segments lit by moonlight, mixed with portions of pale colours as a result of shooting in such a manner. It was shot by Robert’s long-time collaborator, Jarin Blaschke. We also see Willem Dafoe’s character, which Eggers described as a hunter figure, with Depp seemingly playing Taylor-Johnson’s wife.
This is the director’s fifth feature film; outside of his vampire retelling, he has also produced The Witch, The Lighthouse, and The Northman, with plans to direct a Labyrinth sequel, as well as a remake of A Christmas Carol.
Werwulf will be released in UK cinemas on January 1st, 2027.
