Safran “Confident” in DCU After Supergirl Falters at Box Office

After a less-than-stellar opening weekend at the box office for Supergirl, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran is reassuring his confidence in the DCU moving forward.

The new superhero movie starring Milly Alcock and Jason Momoa received mixed reviews from critics and audiences (including a B- CinemaScore) and only brought home $68 million globally at the box office, with international ticket sales totalling $30 million and domestic ticket sales coming to $37.1 million.

Supergirl was also reportedly made from a budget of $170 million, meaning it will have to make at least $300 million to $375 million just to break even, which is unlikely to happen.

Now, Safran is admitting that the film didn’t live up to Warner Bros.’ “box office expectations.”

“While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in,” Safran tells The New York Times.

In addition, Variety has reported that the film – whose international box office was lower than first reported – could lose the studio over $100million and be another big summer box office disappointment after Masters Of The Universe (the biggest bomb of the summer), Mortal Kombat II, and Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day all failed to deliver on expectations.

“This was always going to be a tough hurdle for DC and Warner Bros. because Supergirl isn’t a character that has ever created an event-level blockbuster,” analyst Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations told the trade.

“Audience perception of ‘Supergirl’ was not good. This is just a case of the film wasn’t good enough to become an event.”

The DCU’s upcoming slate of projects includes Clayface from director James Watkins, which is scheduled to be released in cinemas on October 23rd, followed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn’s next Superman film, Man of Tomorrow, which is set for July 9th, 2027.

In addition, the new Lanterns series is also expected to premiere on HBO this August.

    Supergirl is in cinemas now.
