Having kicked off on 12 June, filming on Bubo Bubo (Uhu) – the 3rd feature film by Hungarian director György Mór Kárpáti following on from his head-turning works Guerilla and Summer To Come – is set to wrap on 12 July.
The lead roles are entrusted to Orsolya Bukovszky (revealed in Summer To Come and soon to be seen in Egyke) and Gergely Váradi (nominated Best Actor at Hungarian Film Week by way of Guerilla, likewise acclaimed in Mastergame and in the series The Informant), with support from Anna Mészöly (who claimed Best Performance in Locarno’s Filmmakers of the Present section thanks to Lesson Learned), Hungarian-Slovakian actress Éva Bandor (The Hungarian Dressmaker and soon screening in Karlovy Vary in Only Beautiful Things to Look at), Károly Kozma (Blossom Valley), Ildikó Tóth (Cloud Above the River Ganges, Blockade), Lajos Ottó Horváth (nominated Best Supporting Actor in Hungary’s annual film awards for Heights and Depths) and non-professional actress Gabriella Vass.
Written by the director himself, the story revolves around a young couple struggling with corporate burnout and the housing crisis, who leave Budapest to move to an isolated summer house to start a family. They’re planning a home birth as a radical act of personal autonomy, but upon arrival, they realise an owl has already made a nest in their home. The woman soon develops an obsession over the bird, inferring a profound parallel between the owl protecting its nest and her own pregnancy. Her obsession causes serious conflict in their relationship, turning this chamber drama into a powerful reflection on an entire generation’s existential anxiety.
Bubo Bubo (Uhu) is being produced by Eszter Kozma and Veronika Gál on behalf of Proton Cinema (whose back-catalogue notably includes films by Kornél Mundruczó and Gabor Reisz), and is executively produced by Viktória Petrányi and Orsolya Bánki, in co-production with Eleonóra Peták (Pioneer Pictures), Péter Fazakas (Futurizmus) and Petra Iványi (Lupa Pictures). The 20-day film shoot is unfolding in the Budapest suburb of Szentendre, with Dániel Császár (Balaton) heading up photography. Distribution in Hungary and world sales are currently under negotiation.
