Nestled between rolling hills and the historic campus of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill is a charming town full of wonderful things to do. It will have you leaving saying “I came for the barbecue, but I stayed for the fun!” There is a good reason why Chapel Hill is consistently rated as one of the best places to live in America and as the best college town in the United States.

    The Legendary Old Well

It’s a town that has been created around the college, which was one of the first public Universities in the country, so you can bet there are tons of iconic things to do in Chapel Hill. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or just someone looking for a quiet town to chill in for a weekend, here are some things not to miss in Chapel Hill.

Chapel Hill at a glance 🔍

    • Accommodation options: Chapel Hill has many historic inns, boutique hotels, and vacation rentals. You would be hard-pressed to find a place for under $150 USD per night, and luxurious hotels go for $250-$350 USD per night on average.
    • Getting around: Downtown Chapel Hill is very walkable, but you will need to drive for longer distances. There is a free bus that operates in downtown.
    • Unmissable sights: No trip to Chapel Hill is complete without eating at Sutton’s Drug Store, cheering on the Tar Heels UNC college basketball team, or exploring Morehead Planetarium!
    • Money saving tip: You can save money by staying in a vacation rental with a kitchen and cooking your own meals. Visit on a weekend to enjoy free parking, and be sure to check out the free attractions such as the Ackland Art Museum and Coker Arboretum.

    1. Explore Franklin Street

    Franklin St

Franklin St, at the front of the college in downtown Chapel Hill, is the street where all the vibrancy lives in Chapel Hill. It’s the main thoroughfare with many restaurants, cafes, bars, and, of course, the ubiquitous Carolina blue merchandise stores. It’s one of our favorite places to hang out, and at times it’s really hard to describe why. Sometimes a love for a place is unexplainable because it’s a connection you find with the energy that vibrates from there. And there is plenty of energy in Chapel Hill. Maybe that might explain a little of the pull that this place has on you.

    2. Eat at Sutton’s Drug Store

woman standing outside sutton's drug store

Four years of visiting Chapel Hill, and we walked past this pharmacy every time without venturing inside. Why would we? We didn’t need medicine. On our last visit to Chapel Hill, we needed some gum, so we walked into Sutton’s to buy some and discovered it wasn’t a drugstore but a Chapel Hill icon. It was a step back in time. At the back of the pharmacy, the chemist in his white lab coat walked around chatting to his guests sitting in the crowded diner.

A small counter wrapped around the tiny cooking area, and patrons sat on spinning stools eating hamburgers, hot dogs, and fries, or waiting for the food to be cooked in front of them.

Along the walls and hanging from the ceilings were hundreds of photos of happy diners. On further investigation, we found photos of Tyler Hansborough, Sean May, Danny Green, and all our favorite basketball players. “Where was Michael Jordan?” we asked. “Upstairs in the safe,” was the reply. This is a true local hangout. In fact, if we had been there a couple of hours earlier, we could have had breakfast with Sean May. Craig was pretty devastated about that miss.

We came back for lunch and had the tastiest vegetarian hamburger. A recommended try is the potato munchers, which are potato, cheese, and jalapeno all wrapped up in a long ball and fried. Delicious! We took my parents there when they were visiting from Australia, and they loved it!

    3. Visit the Carolina Basketball Museum

    Winning Championship Trophies

Chapel Hill is not just a college town; it’s a major US college basketball town. In fact, one of the best basketball colleges in the country. It is the place Michael Jordan says ‘made him who he is today,’ and is why, when he was flying through the air and winning any number of championships for the Chicago Bulls, underneath his uniform shorts were Carolina blue ones.

The Carolina Basketball Museum in Chapel Hill is completely free. You could just watch the first 6-minute introductory video and be hooked on Carolina basketball, even if you’re not into sports games. Even if you are not a Tar Heel or basketball fan, you will enjoy learning about the tradition and history of Carolina basketball and the lessons of success.

Reading the stories, listening to the audios, watching short video clips, and seeing memorabilia such as MJ’s championship rings, recruitment letters, the size of Sean Mays’ feet with his match-winning Carolina shoes on display, and the four championship trophies that stand proudly on display at the end of the tour – which makes for a pretty memorable visit. It’s an iconic thing to do in Chapel Hill, especially for basketball fans.

    4. Walking Tour of the Campus and Shop for Carolina Blue Gear

    Taking a walk on campus

There is a lot of history in Chapel Hill, and it is well worth taking a stroll through the NC University campus to see its historic architecture, listen to the bells ring from the iconic Bell Tower, experience college culture, sit in oak tree-lined parks, and explore beautiful gardens. If you happen to be here during college time, there will be a hive of bustling activity to inspire you to perhaps enroll at the college yourself.

Take a walk from the Old Well down to the football stadium, the walk that the football team does every home game, to the cheers of their loyal Tar Heel fans. Throughout Franklin St and the campus, you will find many book stores and T-shirt shops where you can shop for Carolina blue gear. We can’t help but buy something new each time we visit. We found the best store for variety and price was the student bookstore right in the middle of the campus in the famous Tar Pitt.

    5. Shop for Merch on Franklin St

    franklin st stores

Shopping for Tar Heel merchandise on Franklin Street is an iconic Chapel Hill experience for UNC fans and visitors. Lined with vibrant stores, this bustling street is the go-to destination for all things Carolina Blue. From jerseys and hats to t-shirts and accessories, Franklin Street shops offer a wide range of UNC gear to show off your Tar Heel pride. Popular stores like Johnny T-shirt and Chapel Hill Sportswear have everything you need, whether you’re preparing for game day or looking for a perfect souvenir.

The energy of Franklin Street, combined with its diverse selection of merchandise, makes it the ultimate spot to gear up and celebrate UNC spirit.

    6. Catch a Final Four Game at a Bar on Franklin Street

On many of the walls of the establishments in Chapel Hill, sits a common two-photo spread. One side shows Franklin St deserted, the other shows an hour later, where the same street cannot be seen through the thousands of bodies crammed on the street celebrating an NCAA win in wild Carolina tradition. Twice we have found ourselves in the midst of the action.

Within the bar, with no room for even our elbows amidst the sea of blue, we hollered,  jumped, and cheered with each ball through the net, successful defensive plays, and eventually the final victory bell. And then we ran, with the crowd, out the doors and onto the streets. Bodies stream out from every bar on the street to celebrate with each other, all running straight for the fires.

Crowds gather around fires that are fueled by whatever can be thrown in it, T-shirts, street signs, bar receipts… and then the jumping starts. Egged on by the crowd with cheers and claps, you take a short running start and leap over the fire, hoping that no one does it at the same time as you on the other side.

    7. Eat & Drink at Top of the Hill Restaurant & Brewery

Old Well White with views of Franklin Street

There are many places to choose from in Chapel Hill for dining and red wining. One of our favorite places to have a drink and eat is the Top of the Hill restaurant and bar. As the name suggests, you are at the top of, not the hill, but Franklin Street, overlooking it from the 3rd story establishment.

Top of the Hill is where Franklin and Columbus Street converge, and it is the place where the madness of NCAA fire jumping is in full swing. If you’re not brave enough to be jumping, then this would be the best place to be a spectator from.

Whenever we head to the Hill for a game, you can find us on the balcony enjoying one of our favorite all-time beers, brewed by the restaurant, Old Well White, which is a Belgian wheat-style beer. It’s a top-notch place to have a drink in Chapel Hill, even when a game is not on. It’s also a great place to eat – we usually bring our visiting family and friends here.

    8. Go to a Live College Game

Whether it is football or basketball, get yourself to a live college game. It is the best thing to do in Chapel Hill. The atmosphere is buzzing, and you will witness firsthand the fervor that comes from loving UNC. We love to watch the UNC basketball games whenever we can get tickets! They are usually one of the best teams in the nation, and the stadium is full of screaming fans!

We sat in the stands at the game when the UNC football team upset Miami, at the time, rated as one of the nation’s best. On the final bell, the crowds from the stands moved out onto the field, mobbing the players and each other. We watched in fascination as they climbed either of the goal posts, rocking them until they fell down onto the crowd below, and crowd surfed them around the field.

The next day, the Dean, in a commentary about it, said something to the effect of, “Oh well, we’ll replace them. This is the spirit of Carolina. It cannot be contained.”

Secret tip: If you have a child (if not, borrow one), enroll in the Tar Heels kids’ club. Through this club, we managed to get cheap tickets to the opening football match with fantastic seats right on the center line. We were also invited to attend a special kids’ club meet and greet with the basketball players. It was fantastic to meet the players, mostly for Craig, who volunteered to escort Kalyra onto the court!

    9. Have coffee in the forest

family sitting in forest enjoying coffee at cafe driade
    Coffee in the forest

For the best coffee in Chapel Hill, you must visit Cafe Driade, a hidden gem, offering a serene and picturesque retreat nestled in a wooded setting just off Franklin Street. Known for its artisanal coffee, curated selection of loose-leaf teas, pastries (including gluten-free) and fine wines, this cozy café is a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike.

Its outdoor seating area, surrounded by trees and nature, creates a tranquil escape perfect for enjoying a peaceful afternoon or catching up with friends. It’s also located on the edge of a greenway trail, which will lead you down to the main Franklin St area. Whether you’re seeking a quiet space to read or a scenic spot to savor a handcrafted beverage, Café Driade’s charming ambiance and welcoming vibe make it a must-visit.

    10. Relax in Coker Arboretum

Coker Arboretum is a serene and picturesque garden with a vast living collection of trees, shrubs, and other plants. It was established in the early 20th century and named after Dr. William Chambers Coker, a prominent botanist and professor at the University of North Carolina. Coker Arboretum is five acres of woodland and is known for its beautiful landscapes and easy walking trails, perfect for a nature walk in the Spring. Highlights include the vibrant azaleas in spring and the lush foliage of hardwood trees in the fall.

    11. Visit the North Carolina Botanical Garden

Another beautiful nature spot to visit is the North Carolina Botanical Garden, a stunning natural oasis established in 1951, which is affiliated with the University of North Carolina. The garden has a wide variety of plantings in themed areas, such as the native plant garden, which has local flora, and the herb garden, which has both culinary and medicinal plants.

    12. Admire Works of Art at Ackland Art Museum

The Ackland Art Museum houses an impressive collection of art spanning a wide range of periods and styles. It opened in 1958 and is named after its benefactor, William Hayes Ackland, who donated his extensive collection of artworks to the University of North Carolina. Visitors to the Ackland Art Museum can explore a collection of 21,000 pieces, including European paintings, American art, Asian art, and contemporary pieces. The museum is particularly known for showcasing work that celebrates human expression.

    13. Observe the Night Sky at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center

If you’re looking for things to do in Chapel Hill with kids, head to Morehead Planetarium and Science Center for an introduction to astronomy and science education. Opened in 1949, it’s one of the oldest planetariums in the United States and has since become a vital resource for both the University of North Carolina and the surrounding community. Watch an immersive planetarium show that explores topics such as the night sky, space exploration, and the universe’s wonders. The facility features a state-of-the-art digital dome theater, which has stunning visuals and engaging narratives.
