Olivia Wilde is known around the world by the name that helped launch her Hollywood career, but it is not the surname she was born with.

During a candid podcast conversation, the actress shared the unusual family name that shaped her childhood, explaining how years of teasing taught her to laugh at herself long before she ever stepped onto a movie set.

While appearing on the “Armchair Expert” podcast with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman, Olivia Wilde surprised listeners by revealing that the surname most people associate with her isn’t her family’s original name.

The actress explained that her birth surname, rooted in her Scottish heritage, has long been misunderstood because of its spelling.

“I’ll tell you something – and there’s no way you would know this – it’s pronounced Coburn,” Wilde said per the Daily Mail.

She then revealed why growing up with it could be difficult, saying, “Which I want you to imagine being a kid, when you’re … because it’s spelled ‘Cockburn.’”

Eventually, she decided to adopt the surname Wilde as she pursued acting, choosing it as a tribute to legendary Irish writer Oscar Wilde.

The change helped establish the identity audiences now recognize from films such as “Don’t Worry Darling“ while sparing her from having to repeatedly explain or defend her family name.

Rather than allowing the jokes to define her, Olivia Wilde believes the experience gave her valuable perspective from an early age.

Looking back, she compared growing up with the surname to the famous Johnny Cash song, “A Boy Named Sue.”

She said, “It is very much like ‘[A] Boy Named Sue,’ you know what I mean?”

She even joked that unusual names may have unexpected benefits, noting, “I think it’s important – we should all give our kids devastating middle names just so that you can grow up with like something to be totally bullied for.”

Although classmates often laughed at her surname, Wilde said she rarely took the teasing personally.

“I think it was an early important lesson in laughing along – not in a way that was, like, giving in to the bullies in a way,” she shared.

Instead of feeling embarrassed, she chose to see the humor herself. The actress said, “I don’t know – I thought it was funny too. I was like, ‘Oh, I get it. That’s funny.’”

That outlook, she suggested, helped her develop resilience long before she entered the entertainment industry, where criticism often comes with the territory.

The actress also reflected on how the surname affected other members of her family, particularly her younger brother, Charlie.

During the conversation, Dax Shepard wondered whether life had become easier for children born years later.

“Life was nicer nine years later, a little bit, right? We’ve gotten marginally better,” Shepard said.

Wilde wasn’t convinced that attitudes had changed much. She countered, “I don’t know, have we? I think having the last name looks like Cockburn in any city in any decade.”

Shepard laughed that some things never seem to change. He said, “In fact, it’s kind of comforting, too. It’s like no matter how evolved we get, if your last name is Cockburn …”

Wilde finished the thought with a smile, saying, “You’re always gonna learn to laugh early.”

The actress has also been opening up about one of the most frightening moments of her career.

During the same appearance on “Armchair Expert,” Wilde remembered a near-fatal accident while filming “Cowboys & Aliens.”

According to The Blast, she explained that she, Daniel Craig, and Harrison Ford were leading a horseback charge across the desert while dozens of horses thundered behind them.

After weeks of filming, the cast had become increasingly comfortable in the saddle. That confidence vanished in an instant when Wilde noticed a large ditch directly ahead of her horse.

Before she could react, the horse bucked her off, sending her crashing to the ground. She landed behind a dirt ridge, stunned after hitting her head and back.

As she lay there, she heard the terrifying sound of the approaching horses and believed she was about to be trampled before anyone could reach her.

Everything changed when fellow actor Walton Goggins realized what was happening.

Recalling the split-second decision that followed, Wilde said, “Wal Goggins had seen it ahead of him and in a split-second thought to turn his horse sideways right in front of me and let everyone kind of bash into him.”

His quick thinking redirected the stampeding horses and prevented them from running over her.

Looking back on the incident years later, Wilde credited Goggins’ riding experience for saving her life and described him as a genuine hero whose actions she will never forget.
