Coach crash in Catalonia leaves 44 injured, rate of rich people in Spain soars by 30 percent, Spain to face Austria in World Cup round of 32 and more news on Thursday July 2nd.

The number of wealthy individuals in Spain soars by 30 percent

The number of taxpayers considered wealthy in Spain has soared by nearly a third.

A total of 18,829 taxpayers reported earned income on their IRPF returns exceeding €601,000 annually in 2024, representing a 27.8 percent increase over the previous year and the highest figure on record, according to the latest statistics on individual income tax (IRPF) published by Spain’s tax authority.

Though the figures show this represents a very small percentage of all individual income tax filers (0.08 percent of the total), between 2007 and 2024 the number of taxpayers with incomes exceeding €600,000 has grown by nearly 78 percent, reports Europa Press.

Spain needs 100,000 nurses to reach European average and cover retirement generation

Spain needs 100,000 more nurses to reach the European average and cover generations of upcoming retirements, the profession’s main body has learned.

The country’s General Council of Nursing (CGE) has highlighted this issue, citing the poor figures for Spain: 6.45 nurses per 1,000 inhabitants.

This figure is “well below” the European average, which stands at 8.12 nurses per 1,000 inhabitants.

As for the data by region, the CGE report notes that Navarre leads with 8.97 nurses per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by the Basque Country, with 8.21, which also exceeds the European average this year.

At the bottom of the rankings and below even the Spanish average are Castilla-La Mancha (6.33), the Balearic Islands (6.24),the Valencian Community (5.65), Andalusia (5.62), Galicia (5.33), and Murcia (5.23).

Coach crash in Catalonia leaves dozens injured

More than 40 people have been injured and 4 are in a critical condition following a road accident in the Catalan city of Lleida.

For reasons still currently under investigation, at around 07:15 am on Wednesday morning, a passenger coach crashed into the front of a building in the Catalan city.

A further 32 people with minor injuries were also treated by emergency services and some were taken to hospitals, whilst others were discharged at the scene of the accident.

According to reports in the Spanish press, the bus driver had only been working for a few days for the bus the company in question and was in the company of a more senior driver who was training her when she lost control of the vehicle.

Spain to face Austria in World Cup round of 32

European champions Spain aim to book their place in the last 16 of the World Cup as they take on Austria in Los Angeles at 9pm (Madrid time) on Thursday.

A win will keep them on course for a potential meeting with Portugal or Croatia in the next round.

After arriving at the World Cup as one of the favourites, Spain have made a relatively low-key start to the tournament.

A shock 0-0 draw with Cape Verde was followed by a 4-0 rout of Saudi Arabia before an attritional victory over Uruguay.

But Spain coach Luis de la Fuente maintains his team are on an upward curve and are exactly where they want to be as they reach the business end of the tournament.

“This squad is used to breaking records and overcoming rough patches; we are determined to keep moving forward,” De la Fuente said Wednesday.

“From the time we arrived here up to the Uruguay match, we’ve seen the team begin to regain the automatic movements and patterns they had in the past. Now we have to deliver; there is no margin for error.”

Spain were eliminated on penalties in the last 16 of the past two World Cups, in 2018 and 2022, and have prepared for the eventuality of another shoot-out against Austria.

“Taking a penalty is no trivial matter,” De la Fuente said. “Not everyone is cut out to take one. There’s the psychological aspect – it’s a human element, and every footballer is different.”
