Steve Burton has taken a break from General Hospital, but he is set to make his return to Port Charles right around the corner. In the meantime, he teased what fans could expect from the soap. Interestingly, what he said lines up quite well with what two of the show’s writers already hinted at.
Steve Burton First Joined General Hospital Back In 1991
Burton is an actor known for portraying Jason Morgan on General Hospital. He first joined the soap in 1991, initially leaving in 2012, he returned in 2024 and has been on and off the soap over the years. In addition, he also appeared as the character’s twin, Drew Cain, in 2019, before the character was recast with Cameron Mathison.
In addition, Burton has appeared in a number of other soaps throughout his career. He has played Harris Michaels on Days of Our Lives and Dylan McAvoy on The Young and the Restless.
Burton has been away from Port Charles since this past March, having announced a hiatus from the show back in February. However, he’s set to make his return on July 13.
In the meantime, the actor made an appearance on the That’s Awesome podcast, which he co-hosts with friend and co-star Bradford Anderson. At the time, he teased fans with what they could expect with his return.
Burton admitted that stepping back into the role was “a whirlwind, for sure.” As he explained, “Been a lot going on. Had a lot of good scenes. And it’s good, man.”
Burton’s Co-Host Was Curious If The Soap’s ‘Shift’ Will Impact Jason Morgan In Particular
As the actor explained, “We’re shifting directions a little bit, which is gonna be interesting for fans, so get ready!” Anderson then asked Jason if this new direction applies to Jason directly or if he was just speaking in a broad sense.
Burton then clarified, “Everything that has to kind of do with Jason and his world. That’s where the shift is going to take place.”

Burton then praised the writers for developing the upcoming storyline. As he shared, “I think [the writers] did a really good job. It’s really giving me something to play, which is nice.” He continued, “It’s gonna be interesting. It’s shaking things up, which is gonna be a lot of fun.”
Burton’s comments also line up with statements made by the soap’s head writers, Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten. Speaking with Soap Opera Digest, they shared, “Jason returns from abroad a changed man. His imprisonment has had a profound effect on his outlook, and how he intends to conduct the rest of his life.”
