The Mets did it again, surviving a late push from the Braves to earn a series split. New York jumped ahead in the ninth inning on a home run from Juan Soto, only to cough up the lead in the bottom of the frame. The Mets scored twice in the 10th inning. Luke Weaver stranded the bases loaded to finish off the win.
1. Dodgers finally play extra innings
The Dodgers opened the season with 91 games that finished in regulation. Closer Tanner Scott allowed three earned runs in the ninth inning on Monday to the Rockies. The blown save allowed fans at Dodger Stadium to finally see some free baseball. Since 1900, only the 2005 Red Sox (99 games) went further into the season without playing an extra-inning game (h/t Sarah Langs of MLB.com). The teams traded runs in the 10th inning. The Rockies failed to score in the 11th inning, setting the stage for Dalton Rushing to end it with a walk-off single.
2. Royals crush Sanchez
Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sanchez allowed a career-worst nine runs yesterday against the Royals. Kansas City jumped on the NL Cy Young candidate for six runs in the first inning. The club tacked on a tally in each of the next three innings, chasing Sanchez before he could complete the fourth frame. It was his shortest start since April 2024. The Royals scored in each of the first eight innings of a game for the second time in franchise history (h/t Anne Rogers of MLB.com). They set season highs in runs (15) and hits (22) in the rout.
3. Cardinals/Brewers doubleheader
St. Louis and Milwaukee will play two on Tuesday. Right-hander Jacob Misiorowski will get the ball for the Brewers in Game 1. The rest of the starters have not been determined. It’s a critical stretch for a Cardinals club looking to remain in the mix in a competitive NL Central. St. Louis took two of three from the Cubs over the weekend to tighten the race in the division. The team opened up a massive five-game set on Monday against first-place Milwaukee. The Cardinals lost, slipping out of the final NL Wild Card spot. They’re 8 1/2 games behind the Brewers in the Central.
