Marina Mandri in Eastern Mediterranean
Cypriot filmmaker Aliki Danezi Knutsen is currently in post-production with her latest feature, Eastern Mediterranean, an adaptation of one of the most significant works of modern Cypriot literature. The period drama revisits a pivotal moment in the island’s history through an intimate story of love, identity and political upheaval.
Set in the 1960s, during the turbulent years following Cyprus’s independence, the film follows Margarita, a married journalist and mother, as she struggles to navigate the rapidly changing realities of her country and her own life. Assigned to cover a controversial court case, she finds herself drawn to Ion, her husband’s idealistic uncle and the defense lawyer in the trial. Their relationship sets her on a dangerous journey of self-discovery and political intrigue, as tensions between Greek and Turkish Cypriots continue to escalate.
The main cast includes Marina Mandri (Pause, The Lion at My Back) as Margarita, Andreas Tselepos (Boy on the Bridge, Patchwork), and Dimitris Xanthopoulos (Pari, Zizotek).
Written by Danezi Knutsen, Eastern Mediterranean is based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Cypriot author Ivi Meleagrou, which received the Cyprus State Novel Prize in 1970. The project revisits a one of the most important eras in the island’s modern history, exploring the social and political tensions that emerged in 1963 shortly after Cyprus independence. The film marks Danezi Knutsen’s return to feature filmmaking nine years after Chinatown: The Three Shelters. Her previous works also include Bar, which screened at numerous international festivals, and her debut feature, Roads and Oranges.
Principal photography took place over five weeks in Nicosia during last October and November. The director of photography is Sofronis Sofroniou (Iman). The screenplay previously participated in TorinoFilmLab Extended, the Mediterranean Film Institute’s Script2Film Workshop and the Berlinale Residency, while also receiving script-development support from the Cyprus Ministry of Culture.
Eastern Mediterranean is a Cypriot co-production staged by Aliki Danezi Knutsen and Anna Tsiarta for Roads and Oranges Film Production, in co-production with Andros Achilleos for A.B. Seahorse Film Productions. The film is supported by the Department of Contemporary Culture of the Cyprus Deputy Ministry of Culture. The feature is expected to be completed by early 2027.
