Lucy Dacus has released the video for “Planting Tomatoes” after screening the film last night in New York City. The self-directed video honors Dacus’ home of Richmond, including students from SPARC — a performing arts program that Dacus participated in.
“I got to attend SPARC when my mom was a teacher there,” Dacus says. “It was important for me at that age to be taken seriously by adults, to have people I looked up to believe in me, and to be taught that it’s a worthwhile goal to express oneself. That would have been a major lesson whether or not I ended up doing music, but I’m sure it’s no small part of why I’m comfortable doing what I do.”

On Instagram, she thanked her father for “driving and coordinating” the pedicab, the kids involved, and Richmond, Virginia. Featured in the video are a handful of Dacus’ favorite places, including Dogwood Dell, Hollywood Cemetery, James River Park Pony Pasture, and her friends’ homes.
On July 30, Dacus will host a screening in Richmond with a Q&A and a showing of the 1993 film The Secret Garden.
