Donna Summer got another moment in the spotlight on International Disco Day. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame marked the July 14 holiday by revisiting her 2013 posthumous induction, including Jennifer Hudson’s tribute performance of “Last Dance.”
The Hall’s Instagram page highlighted Hudson’s rendition of the song at the ceremony. Worth the replay.
“Last Dance” was written by Paul Jabara for the 1978 film “Thank God It’s Friday.” It connected right away. The song earned Summer a Grammy Award in 1979 and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Those numbers hit. Paul Jabara was an underrated figure in the disco world. He also co-wrote “It’s Raining Men” alongside Paul Shaffer, another track that became its own genre classic.
Picking Jennifer Hudson to deliver the tribute was a first-round-pick kind of decision. Hudson’s voice operates at an elite level. Most artists don’t get there. She won an Academy Award for her work in 2006’s “Dreamgirls.” She’s also a Grammy-recognized artist in her own right. You don’t call her in for a routine night. You bring her in for moments that actually count.
Hudson’s delivery of “Last Dance” in 2013 gave the ceremony real weight. She didn’t coast through it. She treated the song like what it is – a genuine piece of music history. That’s the difference between a tribute and a performance. Big difference.
Donna Summer died in May 2012 at age 63. Her induction the following year was posthumous. That gave the whole night a heavier feel. Summer had defined the late-1970s pop scene as the Queen of Disco. Songs like “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls,” and “I Feel Love” put her in a class of her own. Producers like Giorgio Moroder shaped the sonic identity of that era alongside her, but Summer’s voice was always the engine.
“Last Dance” was something different even in that catalog. It moved between slow ballad and uptempo. It worked on the dance floor and on pop radio at the same time. That crossover ability earned it the Grammy and kept it in rotation long after the disco era ended.
Disco took real criticism in its time. The backlash ran loud and long. But its impact on dance music, pop production, and electronic music has been impossible to ignore. The Hall of Fame putting Summer in that class in 2013 was part of the music world finally catching up to what disco built.
International Disco Day on July 14 gives everyone a reason to revisit that history. The Hall using it to spotlight Summer’s induction was a solid call. That 2013 ceremony deserves more attention than it usually gets.
Jennifer Hudson keeps showing up for moments like this one. She honors the artist she’s there for without making the evening about herself. Her “Last Dance” in 2013 showed that skill clearly. The Hall of Fame knew exactly who to call.
