A new heatwave is likely on the horizon this weekend.
After a few days of relative calm following the last ola de calor, which ended on July 9th, the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a warning about the arrival of a “period of very high and persistent temperatures” in both the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
This could lead to the third heatwave of the summer, which would begin this Saturday and last at least until July 22nd, with temperatures likely to exceed 40C.
The peak of the heatwave will be on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, and the most affected areas will be the lowlands and valleys of Andalusia, parts of Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Madrid, and the interior of Mallorca.
Four minors drown in two separate incidents in Spain
Three people drowned on Wednesday at the Roncal dam in Navarre, on the Esca River. According to the Civil Guard, the victims were two children (aged 7 and 11) and their mother (29) who were residents of the area and who died while swimming in the river near the village.
In another tragic incident, a search operation in Manlleu (Barcelona) ended in tragedy after 11-year-old twin brothers were found dead in the River Ter. They had gone missing after failing to return home from a local football pitch.
Spain has seen an increase in the number of drownings this summer, particularly among minors.

Attempted burglary at Yamal’s home after World Cup triumph
Burglars tried to break in to the Barcelona home of Spain star Lamine Yamal on Wednesday, shortly after he helped La Roja reach their second World Cup final, police and media said.
“There was an attempted” burglary “at a home in Esplugues de Llobregat” in Barcelona’s outskirts, a spokesperson for Catalan regional police told AFP.
The force declined to identify the property’s owner for privacy reasons, but Barcelona-based daily La Vanguardia said the house belonged to the 19-year-old Spain forward.
Two people wearing balaclavas climbed onto the house’s wall but were surprised by the private security guards and fled, La Vanguardia reported.
The newspaper said Yamal’s house is well known because it once belonged to Barcelona great Gerard Pique and his ex-partner, Colombian music star Shakira, when they lived together in the Catalan capital.
Wednesday’s incident occurred early in the morning, moments after Spain completed their 2-0 victory over France in Texas to qualify for the World Cup final.
Yamal won a first-half penalty that Mikel Oyarzabal converted to open the scoring.
In Madrid, Karim Benzema, Rodrygo and Dani Carvajal are among the football stars to have suffered break-ins at their homes in recent years.
Spanish royal family to attend World Cup final
King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and their daughters, Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia, will attend Spain’s World Cup final showdown in New Jersey on Sunday, the royal palace said.
Spain will face reigning champions Argentina or England after defeating France 2-0 in Tuesday’s semi-final in Texas to move a step closer to a second World Cup title.
Felipe had travelled to Mexico in June to watch Spain defeat Uruguay 1-0 in the group stage, cementing an improvement in relations between the two countries after years of tensions.
