The cricketing world came together in mourning after the passing of Sir Garfield Sobers, one of the greatest players the sport has ever witnessed. The legendary West Indies all-rounder died at the age of 89, just days before what would have been his 90th birthday. Cricket West Indies confirmed the heartbreaking news, bringing an end to an era defined by unmatched excellence with both bat and ball.

Regarded by many as the greatest all-rounder in cricket history, Sobers left behind a legacy that transcended generations. His remarkable achievements, combined with his elegance, versatility and longevity, made him one of the sport’s most celebrated icons. Following the announcement of his passing, current and former cricketers, administrators and world leaders flooded social media with heartfelt tributes, remembering a man whose influence stretched far beyond the cricket field.

Cricket fraternity pays tribute to Sir Garfield Sobers

Several of the biggest names in world cricket led the tributes for the West Indies legend. Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Jay Shah, Ravi Shastri, Ian Bishop, Harbhajan Singh, Shikhar Dhawan, Mohammed Azharuddin and Kapil Dev were among those who expressed their condolences and celebrated Sobers’ extraordinary contribution to the game. Fans across the world also shared memorable moments from his illustrious career, recalling his breathtaking batting, versatile bowling and exceptional fielding that made him a once-in-a-generation cricketer.

Sobers represented the West Indies between 1954 and 1974 and built a record that few cricketers have come close to matching. In 93 Test matches, he amassed 8,032 runs at an outstanding average of 57.78, including 26 centuries, while also claiming 235 wickets with his unique ability to bowl both left-arm pace and spin. His brilliance in the field was equally remarkable, with 109 catches completing an extraordinary all-round record.

One of the defining moments of his career came in 1958 when he scored an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan, setting a new world record for the highest individual Test score. The landmark innings remained the benchmark for 36 years before Brian Lara surpassed it in 1994. Sobers also etched his name into cricket folklore in 1968 by becoming the first cricketer to smash six sixes in a single over during a county match for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan’s Malcolm Nash.

    An enduring legacy beyond records

As captain, Sobers guided the West Indies from 1965 to 1972 and played a crucial role in laying the foundation for the Caribbean side’s dominance in the years that followed. His influence extended well beyond statistics, with his fearless style of play inspiring generations of cricketers across the globe.

Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, in 1936, Sobers made his Test debut at just 17 years of age before enjoying a two-decade international career. He was knighted in 1975 for his outstanding services to cricket, while the ICC honoured his legacy in 2004 by naming its annual men’s Cricketer of the Year award the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy.

His connection with Indian cricket was also a memorable chapter of his career. Sobers enjoyed tremendous success against India, scoring 1,920 runs in 18 Test matches at an astonishing average of 83.47 while also taking 23 wickets. His brilliance earned admiration from generations of Indian cricketers and fans alike. Although Sir Garfield Sobers is no longer with us, his remarkable achievements, unmatched versatility and lasting influence ensure that his legacy will continue to inspire the cricketing world for generations to come.
