Stephen Curry pulled up to Davidson College on Saturday for Day 2 of Davidson Men’s Basketball Mini Camp, and the program knew exactly how to set the scene.
Davidson Men’s Basketball posted footage from the session on Instagram, pairing it with a caption that hit different: “Back when they was askin’ ’bout where Davidson was at…” That caption goes deep. It’s a direct nod to what Curry built at that school. His NBA career hadn’t started yet.
Steph is a four-time champion now, the guy who literally changed the math on how basketball gets played at every level. But he was running the floor at Davidson in North Carolina first. He turned a small liberal arts school into a name everybody knew.
The 2007-08 NCAA Tournament run is still the benchmark. Davidson pushed deep into the bracket with Curry averaging over 25 points per game. Suddenly the whole country was Googling “Davidson College.” Nobody could figure out where this school even was.
That’s the era the caption is nodding at.
The Instagram post drew 12,882 likes, solid pull for a college basketball program posting mid-July camp content.
Now Curry’s back on campus. These visits don’t just happen. It takes a real connection, and Curry’s runs deep. The relationship didn’t end at the draft. He came back in 2021 to finish his degree and actually walk across the stage. Then he came back again.
Day 2 means he was already out there earlier this week too. This isn’t a photo-op drop-in. He’s showing up, putting in work, running players through drills. Real engagement with a program that clearly still matters to him.
Think about what that means for Davidson’s current players. Curry is one of the greatest shooters the sport has ever seen, and he’s choosing to spend part of his July at a small liberal arts school in North Carolina. Not from obligation. Davidson is part of his story, and he hasn’t forgotten it.
That matters. Davidson didn’t build its reputation off a big conference name or a string of national titles. The program built something different. It built it off a kid from Charlotte who got overlooked by bigger programs and found his way to a small school in North Carolina. That kid changed the sport. Davidson’s profile changed with it. Now the players in that gym get to learn from him directly.
The caption on Saturday wasn’t bragging. It was remembering. Not long ago, people had to Google Davidson College just to find it on a map. Steph showing up for mini camp, two days in a row, is its own kind of answer to that question.
