West Indies recently announced their squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Pakistan, scheduled to begin on July 25, but one major omission immediately grabbed attention. Star fast bowler Alzarri Joseph, widely regarded as the leader of the Caribbean pace attack, was missing from the 15-member squad. His absence is expected to be a significant setback for the hosts, considering the impact he has had in recent Test matches and his role as the side’s frontline fast bowler. With Pakistan arriving for an important World Test Championship contest, many were left wondering why one of West Indies’ biggest match-winners would not be part of the series.

Daren Sammy reveals why Alzarri Joseph is not in the Test squad

West Indies head coach Daren Sammy has now shed light on Joseph’s absence, confirming that the fast bowler had opted out of the series despite initially being selected.

Speaking during a media interaction, Sammy admitted that losing a bowler of Joseph’s calibre was a major blow for the team but clarified that the decision did not come from the coaching staff.

“Yeah, it is a big loss. Mr Joseph has declined selection. That’s the reality of the situation. He was selected. He’s now coming back from injury, and for reasons since, he has declined the selection,” Sammy said.

The former West Indies captain also explained that the matter was beyond his authority and would instead be handled by the board and team management.

“That is a decision that is way over my head. I leave that with the directors to come up with whatever solutions where contracted players get to decline selection,” he added.

Interestingly, when Cricket West Indies unveiled the squad earlier this week, the official statement only mentioned that Joseph was unavailable due to “personal reasons.” Sammy’s comments have now provided greater clarity on the situation, revealing that the 29-year-old had chosen not to participate despite being available for selection.

Joseph’s absence comes shortly after his return from a lower back injury. The right-arm quick had missed the tours of India and New Zealand before making his comeback in the Test series against Sri Lanka, where he claimed six wickets in two matches. He also featured in the subsequent five-match ODI series against New Zealand before withdrawing ahead of the Pakistan assignment.

Sammy remains optimistic despite losing his pace spearhead

Despite being without one of his premier fast bowlers, Sammy believes West Indies possess enough quality to compete strongly against Pakistan. The head coach expressed confidence in the current bowling unit, insisting that the side still has the ability to claim 20 wickets, which he believes is the foundation for winning Test matches.

Sammy pointed to the team’s recent bowling performances against Australia and New Zealand as proof that the attack can trouble quality opposition. He also highlighted the encouraging improvement shown by the batting unit during the recent Test series against Sri Lanka, where the batters displayed greater consistency. According to Sammy, combining disciplined bowling with improved batting performances will be the key to securing positive results against Pakistan.

“What I could tell you [is that] we have a bowling line-up that we’ve seen that could take 20 wickets. That’s the first start to winning Test matches. We saw it in New Zealand. We saw it in the Australia series. We matched Australia with the ball. We matched New Zealand with the ball as well. And the confidence and the work that the batters have put in, you could see it bearing fruit in the Test series against Sri Lanka. You know, much more consistency coming through. So once we match these two, batsmen scoring runs, we know we have the bowling line-up to take 20 wickets and help us win Test matches,” Sammy added further.
