Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, Furious is a dark crime drama that somehow manages to be an incredibly easy watch. It’s intense, violent and emotionally heavy, yet it’s also one of those shows that’s dangerously bingeable. Every episode moves at a pace that makes it difficult not to hit “next episode.”
Premiering on Disney+, Furious follows FBI agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) as she hunts a mysterious and methodical female serial killer. As both women are forced to confront their own pasts, the line between justice and revenge begins to blur.
A lot of that comes down to the cast. Rossum leads the series with a quietly compelling performance as Alice, bringing just enough vulnerability beneath the detective’s hardened exterior. She’s the clear standout, but she’s surrounded by a consistently strong ensemble including Lola Petticrew, Scoot McNairy, Jake Lacy and Quincy Tyler Bernstine. It’s one of those casts where you’re constantly thinking, “I know them from somewhere.”
The series feels heavily inspired by Killing Eve. At its centre are two deeply damaged women, one hunting, one killing, whose lives become increasingly intertwined as the investigation unfolds. The comparison isn’t a criticism either. Furious finds its own identity through the way it explores trauma, showing how two people can respond to pain in completely different ways while ultimately chasing the same thing.
The first episode is probably the weakest. The show reveals a little too much too early, leaving very little mystery surrounding its killer and taking some of the tension out of the investigation. Instead of asking who the killer is, the series becomes more interested in why these characters are the people they’ve become. Once that emotional complexity begins to take over, the series becomes far more engaging.
The dialogue is another reason the series is so easy to watch. It’s straightforward without ever becoming distracting. Occasionally it borders on the generic, but almost every scene delivers a line that cuts through and reminds you there’s real thought behind these characters. For all its darkness, the show also knows when to lighten the mood. Small moments of humour are sprinkled throughout, preventing the series from becoming emotionally exhausting without ever undermining the drama.
It may not be groundbreaking, but it doesn’t need to be. Furious is an entertaining, character-driven series that balances familiar genre conventions with enough emotional depth to keep you invested. If you’re looking for an easy evening binge that’s just challenging enough to keep you thinking, this is well worth your time.
