Fans who took pictures with a denim Deadpool cosplayer on the floor at San Diego Comic Con were shocked to find out that the cosplayer was actually the Merc with the Mouth himself, Ryan Reynolds.
The surprise appearance was only revealed during Marvel’s Hall H presentation, when Robert Downey Jr. called on a cosplayer supposedly named Ricky while on stage with his Avengers: Doomsday co-stars. “Who’s this guy with the swords and stuff?” asked RDJ, who played Iron Man for 11 years and is now taking on the role of Doctor Doom.
But the cosplayer was really Reynolds in costume as Deadpool. He asked if production on Doomsday had started yet and if there would be any additional photography to add new people to the mix. After some “awws” from the crowd and a gentle letdown from Anthony Russo, he then dropped the microphone and walked out of Hall H.
The actor later shared a behind-the-scenes video on social media of his undercover visit as he walked the floor at SDCC.
“The fans got Deadpool off the ground so many years ago,” Reynolds wrote on Instagram with the video. “Yesterday, 10 years after the first film and exactly 2 years after Deadpool & Wolverine, I felt so lucky to be on the #SDCC floor with everyone whose unapologetic devotion brings so much joy to this world. No handlers, no security, no ropes. WHAT A GIFT. Thanks to everyone I met, who aren’t only cosplaying but world-building. And also… actual Sergeant Slaughter!”
While it seems as though Deadpool will not be making an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday (or maybe he will, because who knows at this point?), Reynolds recently confirmed at New York’s Fanatics Fest that Deadpool 4 is in the works, so at least that’s something we can all look forward to.
Avengers: Doomsday will be released in cinemas on December 18th.
