Shot-put star Sarah Mitton captured her second straight Commonwealth Games title to headline Canada’s relatively slight four medals on Day 6 in Glasgow.

Mitton, a two-time indoor world champion and a silver medallist at the 2023 outdoor worlds, sent her best throw 19.88 metres to win by more than two metres. The Brooklyn, N.S. native’s victory gave Canada its third gold medal in track and field at these Games, following a hammer-throw sweep by reigning Olympic and world champions Ethan Katzberg and Camryn Rogers.

A pair of Canadian weightlifters reached the podium today as Alex Bellemarre and Rose Beaudoin took silver and bronze, respectively, and Canada’s world-champion men’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team rebounded from a semifinal loss to England to beat host Scotland 19-9 in their bronze game.

Also, two Canadian boxers clinched a medal (colour TBD) as Amber-Jane Wall and Joshua Ofori advanced to Friday’s semifinals. The winners of each semi square off for gold while the losers are both automatically awarded a bronze.

However, there were a few disappointments on a day where Canada’s medal haul fell well short of the 13 it averaged on Monday and Tuesday.

The women’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team, which came in as the reigning Commonwealth and world champs, went home without a medal after losing to Australia 19-17 in the bronze game as Canadian flag-bearer Kady Dandeneau scored all but one of Canada’s points. On the track, wheelchair racer Nandini Sharma appeared to win a silver in the women’s 1,500m T54 event but was disqualified for obstruction (Canada was appealing). And, in swimming, Canada went medal-less for the second time in three days as star Josh Liendo finished fourth in the men’s 50m butterfly while the Canadian men’s and women’s 4x100m medley teams (featuring Liendo and Kylie Masse, respectively) also placed fourth.

Sarah Mitton’s fifth throw sailed a distance of 19.88-metres, enough for shot put gold Wednesday at the Commonwealth games in Glasgow.

The medley relay capped off an up-and-down Games for Liendo, who repeated as Commonwealth Games champion in the 100m butterfly but placed fourth in each of his other three individual events. Masse won gold in the 50m backstroke and silver in the 100 back to finish with 11 career Commonwealth Games medals.

Despite its relatively lacklustre performance today, Canada remained in second place in the medals standings with 14 golds. Australia leads with 47 and England is right behind Canada with 12. Canada’s 39 total medals rank third behind the Aussies (103) and the English (56).

Here’s more on the top Canadian moments from Day 6 and here’s where to watch CBC Sports’ daily recap show.

    Canadians to watch on Thursday

Here’s who to follow on Day 7, starting with the marquee sport.

    Track and field

Day 1 of the decathlon begins at 5 a.m. ET and features former Olympic champion Damian Warner in the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m segments. The event concludes Friday with the final five legs.

In addition to his Olympic victory in 2021 in Tokyo, Warner took bronze at the 2016 Olympics and has captured four medals at the world championships (two silver, two bronze). He won gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and was leading through seven stages in 2022 before he no-heighted in the pole vault, knocking him out of the competition. The same thing happened at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where Warner was in second place until fouling out.

The men’s 400m semifinals at 8:10 a.m. ET feature 21-year-old rising star Christopher Morales Williams. After bursting on the scene in 2024 by winning gold at the NCAA championships, breaking the Canadian record and making his Olympic debut, he scored the biggest victory of his career this past March, capturing the indoor world title in championship-record time. Lauren Gale is the lone Canadian in the women’s 400m semis at 7:45 a.m. ET. The finals are on Saturday.

Olympic 4x100m champion Aaron Brown will run in the men’s 200m semifinals at 2:07 p.m. ET. He’s in heat 3 with Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme and Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy, the gold and silver medallists in the 100m on Tuesday. Brown’s 4x100m relay teammate Brendon Rodney was disqualified in the opening round of the 200m today for a lane violation.

The women’s 200m semis at 3:05 p.m. ET include a Canadian in each of the three heats: Frederique Chiasson, Marie-Eloise Leclair and national record holder Audrey Leduc. The finals are on Friday.

Five Canadians have qualified for finals on Thursday: Para athletes Chloe Dunbar and Sheriauna Haase in the women’s 100m T47 at 2:34 p.m. ET, George Quarcoo in the men’s 100m T12 at 2:45 p.m. ET, Julia Tunks in the women’s discus at 3:40 p.m. ET, and two-time Olympian Gabriela DeBues-Stafford in the women’s 5,000m at 4:18 p.m. ET.

Here’s the full track and field schedule with startlists and results.

    Other Canadians to watch

    * The final day of weightlifting includes a Canadian in two of the three events: Xavier Lusignan in the men’s 110-kilogram division at 4:30 a.m. ET, and Etta Love in the women’s over-86kg at 9 a.m. ET. Love, 18, makes her Commonwealth Games debut after winning gold at the world junior championships in 2024.

    * Track cycling begins with seven medal events, and Canada has an entry in the men’s team sprint. Qualifying is at 7:37 a.m. ET, and the medal rounds begin at 1:20 p.m. ET. Canada won five track cycling medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games — including three silvers and a bronze by 2021 Olympic women’s sprint champion Kelsey Mitchell, who later switched to bobsleigh and competed in this year’s Winter Olympics.

    * Lawn bowling group play continues in the women’s singles, men’s pairs and Para men’s and women’s pairs events. Three-time Commonwealth Games medallist Ryan Bester and his teammate John Bezear are 2-0 in men’s pairs, Kelly McKerihen is 1-1 in women’s singles, and Jean Stairs and Anne Hibberd are 0-2 in Para women’s pairs. Here are the matchups and schedule for Thursday.
