Former India batter Ambati Rayudu has thrown his weight behind Rohit Sharma‘s future in ODI cricket, expressing confidence that the veteran opener will be a part of India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Amid growing discussions over India’s next generation of ODI stars and the emergence of young talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rayudu believes Rohit’s experience, leadership, and ability to deliver on the biggest stage remain too valuable for the team to overlook.
Ambati Rayudu believes Rohit Sharma remains central to India’s World Cup plans
With India preparing for a three-match ODI series against England in July, questions have resurfaced over Rohit Sharma’s long-term future in the format. However, Rayudu is convinced that the Indian team management has already charted out a clear roadmap involving the veteran skipper.
Speaking to a select group of journalists, Rayudu said he believes Rohit has received clarity from the selectors regarding his future, even if that communication has not been made public.
“I think clarity is important for him and I am sure they would have given it to him. Maybe they are not just giving us the clarity. His experience is invaluable as a leader, not only on the ground but in the dressing room, to keep the atmosphere nice and that is very important going into a big tournament. I am sure he is in the plans and that is the reason why he is persisted with. I am sure he will step up in a big tournament and even against England, he will be hungry and raring to go,” Rayudu said.
The former Chennai Super Kings batter stressed that major ICC tournaments demand experienced players who can handle pressure while guiding younger teammates. According to him, Rohit’s presence extends far beyond his batting, making him an essential figure inside the dressing room.
Yashasvi Jaiswal deserves opportunities, but Rohit’s experience is irreplaceable
One of the biggest selection debates ahead of India’s ODI assignments has revolved around Jaiswal. The young left-hander has impressed whenever he has been handed an opportunity, but with Rohit and Shubman Gill firmly established as India’s preferred opening pair, regular chances have been limited. Rather than viewing it as a choice between the two, Rayudu believes both players should feature in India’s long-term plans.
“For me, both have a place if given a choice. Rohit definitely should be in the plans for the World Cup. You need all that experience to come to the fore to encounter tough challenges which might arise in the World Cup. When it comes to Jaiswal, I think he deserves his opportunity and there is no doubt about it. He will get his due but he should be prepared to contribute in the World Cup and should be a part of the team going forward,” he added.
Strong recent performances strengthen Rohit’s case
Rohit has also backed his credentials with consistent performances in recent ODI cricket. During India’s three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, the veteran opener amassed 143 runs at an average of 47.66 while maintaining an impressive strike rate of 115.32. His fluent batting suggested he remains capable of dominating attacks despite advancing in his career.
Jaiswal, meanwhile, made his own statement by smashing an unbeaten 110 off just 86 deliveries in the final ODI of the series. His century reinforced his status as one of India’s brightest young prospects and strengthened calls for increased opportunities in the 50-over format.
With India balancing the transition between experienced stars and emerging talent, the upcoming ODI series against England could offer further insight into the team’s plans. While competition for places is only expected to intensify over the next year, Rayudu believes Rohit’s leadership, temperament, and proven record in major tournaments make him an indispensable figure as India begin their journey toward the 2027 ODI World Cup.
