Goalkeepers Bart Verbruggen and Yassine Bounou both produced fantastic saves to keep the scoreline blank between the Netherlands and Morocco at half-time.

A closely-fought encounter remained goalless but there was no shortage of quality on show in Monterrey as the sides fought for a place in the World Cup round of 16 and a clash with co-hosts Canada.

Morocco carried the greater threat with Ronald Koeman’s decision to utilise Denzel Dumfries and Micky van de Ven as wing-backs failing to have the desired impact.

It was the first knockout game between two genuine contenders for the trophy and the sense of anticipation was evident.

The opening exchanges were physical with Jan Paul van Hecke and Ismael Saibari clashing twice in quick succession with referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio having to intervene.

The Dutch had the better of the opening 20 minutes but Morocco exploded into life shortly before the first hydration break with captain Achraf Hakimi, who was winning his 100th cap, prominent.

The Paris Saint-Germain full-back whipped in a right-sided corner that Neil El Aynaoui met on the full but his header was superbly tipped over by Brighton goalkeeper Verbruggen.

A minute later, Hakimi tried his luck from the edge of the area, forcing Verbruggen to palm his powerful effort over the bar.

The Dutch responded after 43 minutes with Van de Ven striding forward and hammering in a piledriver of a shot that Bounou did well to tip over.

Morocco finished the first half in the ascendancy with Azzedine Ounahi shooting over and Saibari just failing to get on the end of Hakimi’s brilliant free-kick having escaped Van de Ven at the far post.
