Trace Adkins rose to fame in the 90s and has had a wild life ever since. From hit songs to new wives, the country music star has experienced it all. Most notably, though, one woman he was married to ended up shooting him in the heart. Now, he’s opening up about what happened. Keep reading to get all of the juicy details.
Trace Adkins Has A Wild Past
It’s no secret that Trace Adkins has had a wild past. The iconic country singer was born in the 60s and became a breakthrough sensation in the 90s. Throughout his exciting life, he has been married four times. Most recently, he married Victoria Pratt, who he is still with today. The happy couple met in 2014 and got married in 2019.
Not all of Trace’s relationships have had very happy endings, though. In 1989, he met a woman named Julie Lauren Curtis. The pair ended up dating for two years and then got married in February of 1991, all before Trace got famous. It seemed like everything was great between the two until things took a drastic turn, all thanks to Trace’s drinking, something many country artists struggle with.
Apparently, one night an argument started about his drinking that got out of control. Julie tried to call his mom for help; however, he knocked the phone off the wall. Eventually, one thing led to another, and Julie shot her husband.
Opening Up About The Story
Julie sent a bullet through her husband’s heart and lung with a .38-caliber revolver.
While it was a bad situation at the time and Trace ended up in open-heart surgery because of it, he’s able to talk freely about it now. According to the singer, he doesn’t even really think she knew what was going to happen if she pulled the trigger.
“I don’t think she even had any idea what that gun was gonna do,” he says, according to Page Six. “I’d never seen her hold a gun, I’d never seen her shoot a gun. I knew she had one, but I’d never seen her use it.”
Not only is he not mad at his ex-wife, but he is also able to joke about the whole thing now.
“That took it a little far, I thought. That was uncalled for. That was totally uncalled for. Just leave. Let’s just call it quits and we don’t have to go that far,” he jokes.
Talking About Recovery
While the injuries seem extreme, it was apparently the recovery that was the worst.
“The recovery from something like that, that hurts,” he explains. “They don’t care, they just stretch everything and break stuff. They’re just trying to get to your heart to save your life.”
Needless to say, the couple divorced after that. But Trace is still willing to defend her, explaining she likely thought he was indestructible.
“I’ve just always felt like I don’t think she meant to do it,” he says. “I just don’t think she thought it was gonna hurt me. She thought I was indestructible.”
