9:41pm: Both sides have officially announced the trade.
8:34pm: The Braves are adding outfielder Lane Thomas and left-hander Bailey Falter in a trade with the Royals, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN. It’ll be minor league pitchers Carter Holton and Lucas Braun heading back to Kansas City, per Robert Murray of FanSided.
Atlanta picks up a veteran bat who should provide a boost in the corner outfield. The club has leaned on Mauricio Dubon and Mike Yastrzemski in left field this season. The pair headline a group that has combined for a .646 OPS, the second-worst mark in the league. Thomas should step into the role, at least against left-handed pitching. Dubon likely moves into more of a utility gig.
The 30-year-old Thomas didn’t look like a desirable trade candidate over the first stretch of the season. He stumbled to a .611 OPS through May. Thomas put together a respectable June before turning it on in July. The veteran delivered an .820 OPS and doubled his season-long home run total last month. He pushed his wRC+ over 100 with the strong run.
Thomas has typically been a lefty masher, and 2026 has been no different. He’s slashing .263/.370/.430 against southpaws this season, compared to a .207/.293/.367 line against righties. Atlanta has multiple bats to handle right-handed arms. Yastrzemski and Dominic Smith should remain in the mix with a righty on the mound.
Kansas City stuck Thomas in all three outfield spots this year. He spent most of his time in center field, where he struggled to -10 DRS. He was a useful option in right field (3 DRS), but put up -3 DRS in left field. The latter is most pertinent to Atlanta, considering center field and right field are covered by Michael Harris II and Ronald Acuna Jr. Thomas hadn’t played left field since 2022 with the Nationals before this season.
Thomas signed a one-year, $5.25MM deal with the Royals over the winter. He has another $1MM available in incentives, which haven’t been reported. If no money changes hands in the deal, the Braves will be on the hook for about $1.5MM for Thomas’ remaining base salary this season.
Falter came to the Royals in a deal with the Pirates last trade deadline. He was ineffective down the stretch before suffering a biceps injury. He continued to pitch poorly in his brief time with the big-league club this year. Falter was rocked for five earned runs in his first two appearances. He went on the IL in early April with elbow inflammation. The lefty returned in mid-May and permitted 10 earned runs over 6 1/3 frames. The Royals designated Falter for assignment, and he passed through waivers unclaimed.
The 29-year-old Falter has been solid at Triple-A this year. He’s posted a 3.35 ERA across 43 innings with Omaha. The majority of his outings have come out of the bullpen, though his last seven appearances have been as a starter. Falter went at least four innings in each of his final three starts with the Storm Chasers. He’s pitching on a $3.6MM contract this season, agreed to in his second trip through arbitration.
Falter isn’t the answer to all of the Braves’ starting pitching needs, but he’ll provide another innings-eating option for the club to shuffle through, in the mold of Carlos Carrasco and Martin Perez. The latter stepped in for an injured Reynaldo Lopez and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Lopez is expected to land on the injured list, manager Walt Weiss told reporters after the game (h/t Jesus Cano of The Athletic).
MLB Pipeline ranked Braun as the No. 8 prospect in Atlanta’s system. FanGraphs had him at No. 22 heading into the season, while Baseball America had him at 18th. The Braves took him in the sixth round of the 2023 draft. The 24-year-old righty reached Triple-A for the first time this season. He’s notched a 3.53 ERA in 19 appearances with Gwinnett. All but two of his outings have been starts. Braun boasts a four-pitch mix that includes a fastball, curveball, slider, and changeup.
FanGraphs had Holton a few spots above Braun heading into the year. Baseball America did not, slotting him at No. 30. The lefty did not make MLB Pipeline’s top 30 list. Holton was a second-round pick in 2024. He didn’t pitch at all last season due to injury. The 23-year-old made it back on the mound this season and has posted a 4.32 ERA in 10 appearances between the Complex league and Single-A.
