A packed crowd of over 21,000 fans at The Oval witnessed a masterclass in resilience and big-match temperament on July 02, 2026. In a high-stakes encounter, England Women locked horns with South Africa Women in the second semi-final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in London. Backed by a phenomenal all-round performance from Nat Sciver-Brunt, England secured a commanding 40-run victory to march into the tournament final, leaving the Proteas stunned under the lights.

Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt took England to a formidable score

Choosing to bat first, England’s innings got off to a catastrophic start. The South African opening bowling attack, spearheaded by Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail, tore through the English top order. Within the first 20 balls of the match, England found themselves reeling at a precarious 23 for 3. Amy Jones fell for 5, Danni Wyatt-Hodge managed only 12, and Alice Capsey was trapped leg-before for just 1.

With their World Cup dreams hanging by a thread, captain Nat Sciver-Brunt and veteran batter Heather Knight came together to construct a rescue mission for the ages. The duo survived multiple close decision reviews early in their innings and gradually accelerated to put the Proteas on the back foot. Together, they stitched an extraordinary 133-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Sciver-Brunt played the role of the primary aggressor, smashing a breathtaking 75 off just 47 deliveries, including 8 elegant boundaries. Knight provided flawless support, anchoring the other end with a calculated 58 off 47 balls, punctuated by six fours and a towering six. Although Nonkululeko Mlaba (2/25) broke the stand in the 19th over by dismissing both set batters, the damage was already done. Handy cameos at the death pushed England to a formidable total of 169 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs.

England halt South Africa’s chase to qualify for the finals

Chasing a daunting target of 170 runs to seal a place in the final, South Africa needed a flying start. While they managed a decent mandatory powerplay, scoring 43 runs for the loss of skipper Laura Wolvaardt (17), they could never truly break free from England’s disciplined bowling lines.

Opener Tazmin Brits fought valiently, carrying the batting unit on her shoulders. Brits notched up a resilient half-century, scoring 51 off 45 balls, featuring six boundaries. However, she found little to no support from the other end. The dangerous Marizanne Kapp was kept completely quiet, managing just 5 runs off 7 balls before being undone by Charlie Dean.

England’s spin and pace variations choked the scoring rate effectively during the middle overs. Lauren Bell was clinical, registering figures of 2 for 28, while Dean mirrored the impact with 2 for 31. Sophie Ecclestone was exceptionally economical, picking up 1 for 21 in her four overs.

Complementing the bowlers, Sciver-Brunt shone brightly in the field, grabbing two crucial catches to dismantle the South African chase. The Proteas completely lost momentum in the death overs, finishing their innings at a disappointing 129 for 8. With this clinical 40-run triumph, England comfortably booked their tickets to the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Final.
