We now have a better idea of what to expect from OpenAI’s long-rumoured speaker, courtesy of Bloomberg.

Per the publication’s ever-reliable Mark Gurman, this doughnut-shaped smart speaker will lack a display but be roughly the size of a hockey puck to make it easy to carry around the home in one hand. What’s more, Gurman says it will have advanced AI-powered “humanlike interactivity” and cost over US$300 (roughly C$420) when it releases sometime in 2027.

Notably, the unnamed speaker is being developed alongside former Apple design exec Jony Ive. The British-American designer left Apple in 2019 to pursue his own ventures, one of which, the AI company io Products, was acquired by OpenAI in 2025. Ive is one of many former Apple employees who have since joined OpenAI, a fact that’s at the heart of the iPhone maker’s trade secrets lawsuit against the ChatGPT company.

The speaker is reportedly the first in a “family” of devices that OpenAI is planning, although it’s unclear what that might entail. It also remains to be seen how many people would be interested in hardware from an AI company, especially one that’s known for sharing medical misinformation and failing to report an alarming ChatGPT account belonging to the individual who went on to kill many people in Tumbler Ridge, B.C.
