Matthew McConaughey made a rare public appearance with his wife, Camila Alves, and their three children at the Texas screening of his new film, The Rivals of Amziah King, on Monday.
The Oscar-winning actor previously described the project as a “beautiful love story” while praising his character as “a legend of a dude.”
McConaughey’s enduring love story with Alves has been made even more meaningful by his hands-on approach to parenting, which he recently described as the most “important” thing a man can do.

Matthew McConaughey went along with his whole family for the hometown screening of his new movie, The Rivals of Amziah King, on Monday, August 10.
The Interstellar star has been married to Camila Alves since 2012, and together they share three children: sons Levi and Livingston, and daughter Vida.
For the rare outing, McConaughey wore a navy blue suit with a white button-up shirt, while Alves stunned in a patterned suit paired with a hat, per Entertainment Weekly.
Their eldest son kept things cool in a casual outfit, while Livingston wore a suit like his dad. Vida turned out in a black dress and left her dark tresses to flow freely down her back.
McConaughey Praised The Film And His Character
“The Rivals of Amziah” King is a neo-Western crime thriller and dark comedy set in rural Oklahoma that centers around the surprisingly cutthroat world of the local honey trade.
McConaughey stars as Amziah King, a charismatic, music-loving local figure who acts as the informal “mayor” of his small town. He leads a misfit bluegrass band and runs the most prominent honey-producing operation in the area.
Amziah reconnects with Kateri, played by Angelina LookingGlass, his estranged former foster daughter who returns after years away. However, a ruthless rival threatens to destroy everything he has built as his operation is targeted in a devastating sequence of events.
In a 2025 interview with Deadline, McConaughey called the film “a beautiful love story” before praising his character as “a legend of a dude.”
“He’s a giver of belonging and all those misfits we’re talking about, Amziah’s just a guy who gives them a home,” McConaughey said. “And then he is reunited with one of his foster kids from the past, and then shepherding her from a princess to a queen I thought was just a beautiful fable in the middle of all this wild anarchy.”

Parenting has been a major part of McConaughey’s marriage, as he previously called it the most important thing a man can do.
“I think a man’s a prince until he has children, then he becomes a king. I don’t think there’s anything more important that a man can do,” he told host Bear Grylls.
During an appearance on “Bear Grylls” Is Running Wild earlier this year, he touched on the lessons he has learned since becoming a husband and father to his three kids, saying the “greatest art” a man can create is being a “good father to a son or a daughter.”
“In fact, man, we’re mortal. That’s the beginning of our immortality, and hopefully, we’re lucky enough to have offspring, and it continues to pass that down. I think that the greatest art that a man can make is being a good father to a son or a daughter.”
McConaughey Shares Priceless Gem On Raising Kids
Elsewhere in that same interview, the “Dallas Buyers Club” star touched on how he has observed that the best way to teach children how to treat someone is by reflecting it in how you treat their mother.
“It’s a challenge once you have children. Sometimes we get down to track where it’s so much about the kids, and we look up and go, ‘Oh, hey. Yeah. How are you doing?’” he said, referring to balancing parenting with a marriage.
He then added, “And I got to remind myself, I forgot who told me this long time ago, [but] the best example you can give your kids is how you treat the mother.”
McConaughey Weighed In On Conflict Resolution With Alves
Like every other home, the True Detective star previously reckoned that challenges often come up, but it doesn’t automatically translate to throwing in the towel.
In a 2024 joint appearance on the Your Mama’s Kitchen podcast with Alves, McConaughey shared that he doesn’t think of “pulling the parachute” on his marriage to Alves when they have a disagreement. He also weighed in on how food plays a role in mitigating clashes between them.
“…[When you’re] dating somebody and suddenly you get in disagreement, you’re like, ‘Uh oh, this is a sign of things to come. Better get out now,’” he said.
“But you’re married, and you disagree, and you’re like, ‘I’m not pulling the parachute. This is part of it. I’m going to work through this. I’m still gonna serve my man his tea. I’m still gonna serve my lady her steak sushi because I know she loves it.’ Even though we may be in a disagreement,” McConaughey reasoned.
The actor then added that “Sweet food can de-escalate some things, even if it’s a nice piece of chocolate or some ice cream.”
