England have announced a strong 15-member squad for their three-match Women’s ODI series against Ireland in September, with Charlie Dean set to lead the side in the absence of regular captain Nat Sciver-Brunt. The all-rounder gets another chance to captain England after stepping in during the recent ODI series against New Zealand, when Sciver-Brunt was sidelined with an injury.

Charlie Dean gets another leadership opportunity

Dean’s elevation to captain continues England’s efforts to build leadership depth within their women’s set-up. Having already gained valuable experience against New Zealand, the 25-year-old will now oversee a side that features a blend of experienced campaigners and players looking to establish themselves in the ODI format.

Sciver-Brunt has been rested as she continues to manage her fitness and recovery, while Danni Wyatt-Hodge is also unavailable as she works her way back to full fitness. England have also opted not to select Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Bell and Amy Jones for the series.

The absence of several regulars has created opportunities for players on the fringes of the squad to make a strong impression ahead of England’s future ODI commitments.

Alice Capsey set to take over wicketkeeping duties

Alice Capsey is expected to take the gloves in the absence of first-choice wicketkeeper Amy Jones. Capsey served as England’s reserve wicketkeeper at the recent T20 World Cup and will now have the chance to take on increased responsibility in the 50-over format.

Two uncapped players, Grace Potts and Kira Chathli, have also earned their places after spending time around the England set-up during the summer. Their inclusion could provide both players with an opportunity to make their international debuts on home soil.

Charis Pavely is another player waiting for a potential breakthrough. The all-rounder has already represented England twice in T20Is but is yet to feature in an ODI. The Ireland series could therefore mark an important next step in her international career.

Ryana MacDonald-Gay returns after injury layoff

Ryana MacDonald-Gay has been recalled after recovering from the lower-back issue that kept her out last year. The Surrey pacer has enjoyed an encouraging season, producing consistent performances for her county side as well as Manchester Super Giants. England have also included Tilly Corteen-Coleman, with the left-arm spinner hoping to add to her two ODI appearances. Both of her previous ODI caps came during the series against New Zealand, and the upcoming fixtures offer another chance to develop her experience at international level.

The three-match series begins in Leicester on September 1 before moving to Derby for the second ODI on September 3. Worcester will host the final game on September 6.
