With the rise in remote work and opportunities for affordable retirement abroad, many people in the UK choose to live overseas, whether as a temporary or permanent move. In fact, according to the latest data from the Department for Work and Pensions, over 1 million UK
pensioners live outside of the nation.

Some people quickly develop a sense of belonging and build fulfilling lives in their new country. Others spend years feeling unsettled or isolated and are constantly on the verge of returning home. So, what’s the secret to success when settling abroad? These are four
    attitudes that help people thrive.

People who flourish abroad are those who go in expecting nothing and embracing everything. Life probably won’t, and arguably shouldn’t, work exactly as it did at home, and trying to force that just leads to friction and frustration. Accepting that things will feel unsettled for a while and taking situations in your stride will help you find the joy in change.

Remember to restrict the urge for comparison – the thief of joy – and just view your destination with fresh eyes.
Stay curious and make it your mission to understand your destination in detail, from the layout and character of the neighbourhoods to the local customs. Learning the language will immediately help you feel more connected. You don’t need to be fluent – just being able to
make yourself understood, and to understand more in turn, will help you feel more settled in your new location. It’s also important to remain adaptable, so sudden changes feel more manageable.

    They build a life

When you arrive at a destination, the focus is on building a home. Finding somewhere to live and creating your own sanctuary in the chaos are appropriate priorities. However, you shouldn’t get stuck here. That’s where disconnect can creep in. Those who thrive focus on
building a fully rounded life, putting the same energy into all areas of their routine. Investing time in activities you love helps you stay grounded in who you are, translating your sense of self into the new environment. Sharing these passions with like-minded people will
enrich your weekly routine and over time create a genuine sense of belonging. Join local classes and clubs that meet your interests, so these social foundations are clearly integrated into your routine.

Even the most organised expats face unexpected obstacles from time to time. Government regulations and visa requirements may change, and family emergencies might require urgent travel home. Accepting that challenges will occur and maintaining preparedness for
them helps ensure that, when they do arise, they’re irritating at most, rather than destabilising.

Most important is to keep important documents organised and review them regularly, alongside  the latest government updates. This includes keeping passports and visas valid. Registering with a doctor makes access to medical care when needed easier. Maintaining an expat travel insurance policy ensures you have appropriate cover should you need to fly home, or elsewhere, quickly. Having an emergency fund will give you peace of mind too, helping you manage unexpected costs without it disrupting your essential payments and everyday spending.

    They stay connected

Building a new life abroad doesn’t mean choosing to abandon existing relationships. It’s never been easier to connect with people internationally. However, effort is required to stay connected. Otherwise, you do risk losing your social network and the important support it provides.

Create intentional routines for maintaining relationships. Rather than relying on spontaneous calls, schedule regular catch-ups and treat them as important commitments, as you would any other appointment in your diary. This helps you get around the challenge of time
difference and balancing two busy schedules. These habits deliver more than reassurance.

They help you stay involved in the milestones, celebrations and everyday conversations that continue back home.
Establishing new connections is equally important if you want to thrive. As humans, we’re wired for community, and in-person friendships help to protect our health while also enhancing our enjoyment of everyday life. Local friends are also a valuable support system, giving you a safe space for emotional outlets when away from family and providing practical help with the destination’s practical challenges.
