Barack Obama and Josh Turek Hit the Court for Iowa’s ‘Push for Change’

Josh Turek played basketball with former President Barack Obama this week. The Instagram post he wrote about it afterward drew nearly 70,000 likes.

Turek is the Iowa political candidate behind a campaign called “Push For Change.” After the game, he kept his caption short. “Great game, Mr. President,” he wrote, with a basketball emoji. Then came the direct ask: “Iowa, you heard President Obama. The ball is in your court. Join our campaign and help us Push For Change!”

Tight message. Sports metaphor, famous name, clear ask. It found an audience.

Here’s what makes that number worth talking about, friends. Most household-name celebrities would scroll past 70,000 likes without a second thought. For a regional political candidate running an Iowa campaign, it’s a different story. Local and state-level candidates typically talk to small rooms, targeted ad buys, and county party dinners. A single organic Instagram post pulling numbers like that is genuinely rare.

Iowa holds a special place in American politics. Candidates have long made the state a priority. Getting Iowa voters to genuinely pay attention is harder than it looks. Turek found a way in.

The strategy itself is straightforward. You attach your message to a well-known figure. You wrap it in a metaphor everyone already understands. Then you ask for action.

“The ball is in your court” doesn’t require a political dictionary. It’s a line you’d say to a friend. In a sea of campaign ads that sound like campaign ads, that kind of plain language can cut through.

The Obama connection matters too. Former President Obama remains one of the most recognized names in American politics. His name in a caption next to a campaign slogan carries real weight.

Turek’s line “you heard President Obama” does a lot of work. It frames the basketball game as more than an afternoon on the court. The post doesn’t claim a formal endorsement. But the framing is hard to miss.

Turek’s “Push For Change” doesn’t lay out a detailed policy platform in this caption. The name does the work instead: something needs to change, and Iowa residents can push for it.

That simplicity might feel refreshing. Or it might feel thin. Voters will decide.

What the post does well is feel human. Iowa voters have seen every type of political campaign imaginable. They know the ads, the mailers, the handshakes at county fairs. A short caption about a basketball game plays differently. It reads like a real person asking other real people to get involved.

The bigger question now: can a viral moment translate into actual votes? Getting 70,000 people to double-tap is one thing. Converting attention into ballots is a different game entirely.

But this week, Josh Turek got people looking. In regional politics, that’s often how it starts.
