BUDAPEST: Bernadette Mayer’s debut feature Mommy Blue will make its debut in Hungary as part of the 22nd CineFest competition programme in Miskolc, and it will be theatrically released by InterCom on 8 October 2026. The film was backed by the National Film Institute – Hungary (NFI)’s Incubator programme.
Mommy Blue had already become a festival favourite. Its world premiere took place in April 2026 at the 16th Beijing International Film Festival, from which it returned with three awards, and it was recently screened to great acclaim at the Jerusalem, Palić, and Bled international film festivals.
The story follows Krisztina, whose eyesight is gradually deteriorating; she is slowly losing her sight. She is increasingly in need of her son’s help, while the young man is torn in two: as his mother is becoming increasingly dependent on him, he is becoming increasingly attached to his new family. The cast includes Anikó Für, Ildikó Hámori, Benett Vilmányi, Andrea Waskovics, and István Znamenák.
Kino Alfa produced the film in coproduction with Salamandra Film and CineSuper. The producers are Genovéva Petrovits, Csaba Oskó-Szabó, and Zsuzsi Gyurin, and the executive producer is Zoltán Mártonffy.
Mommy Blue received 330,500 EUR / 120 m HUF production support from the National Film Institute – Hungary (NFI)’s Incubator programme. The total production cost of the film was 468,000 EUR / 170 m HUF. The project was featured in the Work in Progress showcase at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
The film was shot in Budapest, Gödöllő, and at Lake Balaton in 2023, with a short additional filming in 2024, confirmed producer Genovéva Petrovits to FNE. “Among other things, this film is significant because it offers Anikó Für a great opportunity to make a comeback on the big screen”, added Genovéva Petrovits.
NFI handles world sales.
