Dane Cook Narrates His Story In The Upcoming Documentary, Funny Money
Cook is a stand-up comedian and actor. He is known for his work in a number of films, including Employee of the Month, Good Luck Chuck, My Best Friend’s Girl, and the animated film Planes.
Recently, the comedian became the subject of a documentary, Funny Money: The Dane Cook Story. Set to premiere on video on demand services on September 29, 2026, the upcoming feature discusses a financial story concerning Cook’s family.
In particular, the story heavily delves into financial drama concerning Cook in 2008. At that time, his half-brother and business manager, Darryl McCauley, was charged with embezzling at least $12 million from the famous comedian.
As noted by Variety, McCauley and his wife, Erika, pleaded guilty to charges including larceny and embezzlement. He was ordered to pay back the $12 million and served a six-year prison sentence.
The Comedian Shared The Belief That More Money Could Have Been Embezzled Than What The Investigation Determined, & People Who Know More Of The Story
Cook himself narrates the documentary trailer, which is set to explore what happened to the brother after he finished his prison sentence. As he shared, “Where is he? What has he done? How does this end?”
Cook claimed that, while growing up, he and McCauley both wanted to be stand-up comedians. While Cook pursued this dream, his brother ultimately became a corrections officer. Cook described McCauley as “a person who spent so much time pretending to be something he wasn’t.”
While working as a handler for Cook’s finances, McCauley began withdrawing sums of $20,000, $50,000, and even $100,000 from his brother’s accounts without telling him. Cook noted, “I was starting to feel something that I couldn’t really identify. Was he hiding it in different places, stockpiling this money?”
Soon, it came to light that McCauley even hid piles of cash in a safe and even wrapped it in plastic before stashing it in pasta sauce containers. An investigation determined that he stole at least $12 million. However, Cook believes that the number could be higher. As he shared, “I do believe that there’s money out there. I believe there’s people that know more.”
