Namibia have announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming T20I tri-series against South Africa and Zimbabwe, with Gerhard Erasmus set to lead the side in Windhoek. The tournament will begin on August 28 and run until September 6, with the three teams scheduled to compete in a double round-robin format before the final. The series will be an important opportunity for Namibia to test their squad against two strong opponents while continuing their preparations for the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
Gerhard Erasmus continues to lead Namibia
Erasmus will captain Namibia during the home tri-series as the team looks to make the most of playing in familiar conditions. The schedule will provide the management with seven matches across the competition to assess different combinations and give players opportunities before settling on their preferred lineup.
The tri-series carries added significance because Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe will all co-host the 2027 Cricket World Cup. Facing each other regularly in the lead-up to the tournament will allow the teams to assess their strengths and identify areas that need improvement.
Namibia will also have to manage their resources carefully with a three-match ODI series against South Africa scheduled immediately after the T20I competition. The ODI series will take place in Windhoek from September 9 to 13.
Michael van Lingen returns after two years
One of the biggest talking points from Namibia’s squad is the return of Michael van Lingen to the T20I setup. The batter has been away from T20I cricket since 2024 and will now have an opportunity to make his return on home soil. Van Lingen adds further depth to a squad that includes several experienced Namibia internationals. Ruben Trumpelmann, Jan Frylinck, JJ Smit and Bernard Scholtz are all part of the group and will provide valuable experience alongside the returning batter.
The home conditions could also give Namibia an advantage as they look to challenge South Africa and Zimbabwe during the competition. With several matches in a short period, the team management will have enough opportunities to rotate players and assess their combinations. The tri-series is also being viewed as a precursor to the proposed Africa T20 Cup, which is planned to begin from 2027.
