People in Spain are finally experiencing a break from the relentlessly hot summer weather thanks to a general drop in temperatures across the country. But does this mean that the summer is over and the cooler weather is here to stay?
Much of Spain has been experiencing a respite from the intense heat over the last few days with morning and nighttime temperatures much lower than they have been recently.
This somewhat cooler air is expected to carry on into this week too, but does that mean that the crazy heatwaves we’ve been experiencing this summer are finally over?
Spain’s State Meteorological Agency Aemet confirmed on their social media channels that this week would bring “temperatures below normal, more typical of September”.
For this week, their meteorologists have predicted showers and storms in the northeast of the country, which could be accompanied by hail, strong gusts of wind. This will again keep the mercury down and bring cooler air.
For the rest of this week, Aemet have also forecast showers in the northwest of the country.
From Friday August 28th to Sunday August 30th, no rain is predicted, however, and temperatures are set to rise again over the weekend.

Unfortunately, that means that this dip in temperatures is simply a brief respite from the intense heat, autumn is most definitely not here yet.
Although Aemet’s experts say that predicting weather patterns accurately during a period of instability is difficult, they have still made from general forecasts for the end of the month, into September and beyond into the autumn season.
Aemet’s monthly forecast warns that the week of August 31st to September 6th will return to “temperatures above the normal average”.

The only exception will be the western part of the country where they will be considered normal for this time of year.
The following week, from September 7th to 13th “will be in principle, warmer than normal in most of Spain” they continue.
For the rest of September and October as a whole, Aemet predicts a very high probability that the average temperature across Spain will remain warm, specifically within the top third of the historical data series.
So, there’s no need to put that summer wardrobe away just yet. The swimsuits, shorts and skirts will be here to stay for quite a while yet.
This summer has already been one of the hottest on record, with July temperatures beating all the rest in the historical series. It remains to be seen how August stacks up against previous years, but with the heatwaves and wildfires, it’s looking likely this could be one of the hottest too.
