Spain marks one year since historic blackout, Princess Leonor to study politics at university, Spanish house prices prevent more than two million from moving and more news on Tuesday April 28th.

Spain marks one year since historic blackout

On April 28th 2025, the entire Iberian Peninsula and parts of southern France were submerged into darkness by an unprecedented apagón (blackout) that lasted less than a day but that still affected Spain’s 48 million inhabitants in one way or another.

One year on, many doubts over the true causes and culprits linger. A report in March of this year concluded that “a perfect storm of multiple factors” was to blame, but there is still plenty of disagreement and, crucially, the risk of another blackout has not been ruled out.

House prices prevented more than two million from moving last year

Two out of three people in Spain who looked for a new place to live last year had to settle for staying in their current home because of high house prices.

In total, 2.14 million people, 67.2 percent of all those who tried to move, ended up staying because prices were so high.

This is according to analysis carried out by Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) which indicates that around 3.2 million people, 7.6 percent of the population aged 16 and over, unsuccessfully sought a new home in 2025.

Spain’s Princess Leonor to study politics at university

Spain’s Princess Leonor will study for a bachelor’s degree in Political Science at Carlos III University in Madrid, according to an announcement by the Royal Household.

The academic programme lasts four years and will begin in the third term of 2026.

The Princess passed the selection process applicable to students who have completed their secondary education abroad and has received a favourable decision from the Assessment Committee.

Teacher in southern arrested for mistreating young children

Spanish Police have arrested a teacher accused of allegedly mistreating 18 preschool children, aged between three and four, at a public school in the southern city of Córdoba.

The complaints filed by the parents with the judge include scenes of abuse recounted by their children and allegedly carried out by the teacher, such as leaving them locked in the bathroom without light while crying, hitting their hands, pulling their hair, pinching their private parts, fondling them, touching them inappropriately, pinching their ears, or grabbing them by the neck, according to the newspaper ABC.
