The deaths of a couple, a 48-year-old New Zealander and his 51-year-old Irish wife, in a vacation rental in the seaside town of Cullera, on Spain’s eastern Mediterranean coast, appear to have been the result of a tragic chain of accidents, according to preliminary autopsy findings, sources familiar with the investigation said. Although early signs suggested the possibility of violence, the working theory among forensic specialists and homicide detectives from Spain’s Civil Guard has increasingly shifted toward a fatal sequence of events that may have begun with a malfunction involving the property’s hot tub.
According to investigators’ reconstruction of the incident, a sudden medical emergency or a technical fault may have prevented the woman from getting out of the hot tub. Her husband, while trying to help her, may have suffered an electric shock while handling the equipment. Investigators are also examining whether the inhalation of a gas or other substance played a role in the deaths. However, no definitive conclusions will be reached until toxicology results are available.
The couple’s two children, aged 14 and 15, discovered their parents’ bodies on Tuesday beside the hot tub at the rental property, located in the upscale Cap Blanc residential area of Cullera. The family had rented the house for a holiday. The teenagers sought help from a neighbor, who alerted emergency services.
The Civil Guard’s homicide unit took charge of the investigation. An initial examination of the bodies, which were found unclothed beside the hot tub, revealed no obvious signs of violence. Investigators later detected injuries that appeared to be puncture wounds. A more detailed inspection also ruled out the possibility of a break-in or assault at the property, reinforcing the theory that the deaths were accidental.
Among the scenarios considered by investigators is that one of the victims slipped and fell, sustaining injuries, while the other may have caused additional wounds while attempting a rescue. Authorities are also scrutinizing the operation of the hot tub itself, as when the police arrived at the residence, they detected a strong, unidentified odor.
The bodies were transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Valencia late on Tuesday for autopsies, which investigators hope will clarify the cause of the unusual deaths.
