The Reds signed veteran infielder Orlando Arcia to a minor league contract. They assigned him to Triple-A Louisville, according to the affiliate.
Arcia is back in affiliated ball after a three-game stint in the Mexican League. The former All-Star shortstop was in the majors as recently as June, appearing in 19 games and tallying 50 plate appearances for the Twins. Arcia hit .271 with a .300 on-base mark and one home run in that limited stint. He split last season between the Braves and Rockies, struggling to a .202/.238/.291 line with a trio of homers across 214 trips.
The 32-year-old Arcia is now three seasons removed from a two-year run as a league average starting shortstop in Atlanta. He still makes a decent amount of contact and can play anywhere on the infield. Arcia has never been one to work many walks and has seen his power production dip after consecutive 17-homer showings in 2023 and ’24.
Elly De La Cruz suffered a minor quad tweak over the weekend and has been at designated hitter for the past two games. Matt McLain has slid to shortstop with Edwin Arroyo and the recently recalled Juan Brito available to cover second base. Arcia provides an experienced depth option for the final couple weeks of the season.
