Pete Crow-Armstrong belted a game-ending two-run homer in the 10th inning to cap a 4-for-5, two-homer night and lift the host Chicago Cubs to a 7-5 victory against the Chicago White Sox on Monday.
The center fielder, who also homered to lead off the Cubs’ half of the first inning, became the sixth player in history to produce leadoff and walk-off home runs in the same game, according to MLB.com. The game-ending shot was also his 30th long ball of the season, making him the 10th player ever to register back-to-back 30-30 seasons (30 homers, 30 stolen bases).
Nico Hoerner added four hits and two RBIs while Alex Bregman had three hits for the Cubs, who had lost three of their previous four games.
The White Sox rallied from a pair of deficits and held the lead in the bottom of the ninth before Hoerner tied the game with an RBI single off Jordan Hicks. After the White Sox failed to score with the bases loaded in the 10th, Hagen Smith (2-1) yielded Crow-Armstrong’s blast leading off the bottom of the 10th.
Mets 2, Padres 1
Nolan McLean tossed six eventful innings and earned the win after benefiting from three outfield assists as host New York edged San Diego.
Right fielder Carson Benge threw out two runners at home in the first inning and left fielder A.J. Ewing nabbed a runner at the plate to end the second for the Mets, who became the first team since at least 1920 to throw out three runners at home in the first two innings of a game.
In all, the Padres made four outs at home between the first and second innings. New York improved to a major-league-best 10-3 since the trade deadline while San Diego fell to 9-4 since the deadline.
Phillies 6, Marlins 5
Cristopher Sanchez worked six effective innings to become the majors’ first 16-game winner as Philadelphia nipped visiting Miami for its fourth straight win.
Sanchez (16-4) allowed one run while working around eight hits and three walks. He struck out six before the Phillies’ bullpen held on. Jhoan Duran gave up a run in the ninth but nonetheless picked up his 27th save.
Bryce Harper had three hits for Philadelphia, while Derek Hill knocked in a pair of runs. Miami’s Brian Navarreto hit the game’s only home run while Marlins starter Janson Junk (6-8) gave up two runs and eight hits in five innings.
Cardinals 2, Reds 1 (Game 1)
Six St. Louis pitchers combined to limit Cincinnati to three hits as the visiting Cardinals claimed a victory in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.
Alec Burleson provided all the offense St. Louis needed with a two-run double in the first inning. Luis Gastelum (3-2) struck out a pair in a perfect inning of relief. Riley O’Brien struck out the side in the ninth for his National League-best 31st save as the Cardinals recorded 15 strikeouts in all.
Dane Myers delivered two of the Reds’ three hits, including a home run. Kent Emanuel (0-1) permitted two runs on five hits in five innings during his major league season debut.
Reds 6, Cardinals 5 (Game 2, 10 innings)
Elly De La Cruz got his first walk-off hit with a 10th-inning RBI double to help Cincinnati come from behind and earn a doubleheader split against visiting St. Louis.
De La Cruz, who finished 2-for-4, led off the 10th and hit a hard ground ball into left field against Justin Bruihl (0-1). Dane Myers had tied the game on a pinch-hit blast off Peter Strzelecki with two outs in the ninth. Reds closer Emilio Pagan (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning.
Ivan Herrera hit a home run for the Cardinals. Jordan Walker went 3-for-5 and scored twice to finish 5-for-9 in the twin bill.
Twins 4, Braves 2
Josh Bell went 2-for-3 with a two-run double as Minnesota scored four runs in the first and made them stand up to beat Atlanta in Minneapolis.
Kody Clemens finished 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Twins, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Minnesota reliever Travis Adams (3-0) tossed two perfect innings, and Yoendrys Gomez threw a hitless ninth inning for his 18th save.
Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a two-run single for the Braves, who took their third loss in four games. Drake Baldwin went 2-for-5 with a double. Martin Perez (8-7) gave up four runs on nine hits in five innings.
Rays 7, Orioles 6
Jonathan Aranda and Jonny DeLuca had run-scoring hits in a three-run, seventh-inning rally as Tampa Bay defeated Baltimore in St. Petersburg, Fla., salvaging the finale of a four-game series.
Aranda delivered a single to left off Yennier Cano (2-3) that pulled Tampa Bay within 6-5. Two batters later, with Josh Walker on the mound, pinch hitter DeLuca chopped a two-run single to left. Yandy Diaz (home run) and Aranda (double) had two hits apiece for the Rays while Ryan Vilade and Jorge Mateo each homered.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand finished 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs for the Orioles. Coby Mayo and Pete Alonso each had a home run among their two hits.
Red Sox 11, Diamondbacks 1
Mickey Gasper and Willson Contreras each hit a solo home run as part of a 16-hit attack that propelled Boston over visiting Arizona.
Caleb Durbin and Ceddanne Rafaela collected three hits apiece for the Red Sox, who received two RBIs from both Gasper and Wilyer Abreu. Brayan Bello (5-6) held the Diamondbacks to one run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings of relief.
Arizona starter Mitch Bratt (1-2) allowed three runs on four hits in three innings. Tim Tawa had two of the Diamondbacks’ four hits.
Dodgers 11, Rockies 5
Shohei Ohtani hit two home runs and finished with four hits, Max Muncy also went deep and singled, and Los Angeles beat Colorado in Denver to win for just the second time in its past eight road games.
Andy Pages and Freddie Freeman had three hits apiece for the Dodgers. Blake Snell (1-1) gave up a run on two hits in six innings.
Adael Amador hit an RBI single and scored twice for the Rockies, who had won four of their previous five games. Tomoyuki Sugano (12-6) allowed seven runs, six earned, on seven hits in five innings.
Royals 9, Athletics 5
Bobby Witt Jr. singled, doubled, homered, drove in three runs and scored four times as Kansas City beat the visiting Athletics.
Maikel Garcia returned to the lineup for the first time since June 22 and contributed two hits, an RBI and a run as the Royals won for the third time in four games. The veteran infielder had been sidelined due to a muscle strain in his left hand.
Royals right-hander Michael Wacha (6-8) allowed four runs and six hits in five innings for his first win in nine starts. A’s right-hander Mason Barnett (1-4) was tagged for six runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings. He could not take advantage of home runs by Jeff McNeil, Tommy White and Brian Serven.
Tigers 8, Pirates 5
Hao-Yu Lee and Zach McKinstry each had three hits while Kevin McGonigle added two hits — including a two-run homer — to help Detroit outlast host Pittsburgh.
Lee drove in two runs and Max Clark also had two hits as the Tigers snapped a three-game skid with 14 hits. Detroit starter Framber Valdez (8-8) allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits over 5 2/3 innings, and Kenley Jansen tossed a perfect ninth for his 16th save.
Nick Yorke delivered a three-run double for the Pirates, who had won three of their previous four games. Carmen Mlodzinski (6-6) gave up four runs on eight hits in three innings.
