Heavy rain and strong winds expected in Spain on Monday

Stormy weather that’s been battering Portugal will move east on Monday and reach Spain, bringing bad weather to a large part of mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands.

The day will be marked by heavy showers, gusts of wind exceeding 70 km/h and a general drop in temperatures.

The effects will be especially noticeable in much of the western half of the peninsula – Galicia especially – where there will be heavy rainfall and lower temperatures.

The stormy weather is expected to give way to a temperature drop across much of the country from Monday to Wednesday.

Madrid will bask in a comparatively cool 28C today, for example, while people in Seville will enjoy 29C.

Heavy rain battered northeast Spain over the weekend, flooding streets, trapping people in cars, forcing the evacuation of a campsite and injuring 11 people.

Morocco asks Spain to repatriate Ceuta survivors and deceased

Morocco’s Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi on Saturday requested that Spain repatriate to Moroccan territory both the surviving migrants and the bodies of those who drowned during the July 30th mass migrant crossing.

In an interview with the Arab news channel Al Arabiya, Ouahbi called for the signing of an agreement to return both the survivors and the deceased and, more generally, for a comprehensive approach to addressing migration between the two countries.

Furthermore, the minister has conditioned Morocco’s acceptance of the bodies of its nationals who died during the last migration crisis in Ceuta on two requirements: the delivery to Rabat of its forensic reports and the repatriation of Moroccan minors who are in the Spanish city.

EU slams Spain for “chronically low” R+D investment

Brussels has reprimanded Spain for its particularly low levels of investment in the Research and Development sector, below both the EU average and the targets set for Spain.

The European Commission has defined Spain’s funding as “chronically low.”

“Spending remains low and private sector investment lags far behind,” Brussels stated in an official report. Investment in R&D stood at just 0.65 percent of GDP in 2024, well below both the EU average of 0.72 percent and Spain’s own target of 1.25 percent.

Brussels also highlighted the weak connection between the scientific community, research centres, and businesses. The translation of science to the market is very weak, and all of this hinders productivity growth , according to its analysis.

Granada earthquakes cost €35 million in damages

Following the recent earthquakes in the province of Granada, thousands of victims have filed claims seeking compensation for damage to businesses, homes, and property.

Spain’s Insurance Compensation Consortium (CCS) has received 12,531 claims related to the series of earthquakes. The estimated cost of the damage so far exceeds €35 million.

Most of the claims are damages to homes, but there are also hundreds of claims are for damage to businesses and warehouses, offices and vehicles.

There are even claims for damages in 10 municipalities in Málaga and 9 in Jaen.
