Ange Postecoglou has returned to management after being appointed head coach of Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.
The former Celtic and Tottenham manager has signed a two-year contract with the club and will now work alongside Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo.
Postecoglou succeeds Jorge Jesus, who guided Al-Nassr to the Saudi Pro League title last season, ending the club’s seven-year wait for domestic success.
Confirming the appointment, Al-Nassr said in a statement: “Mr. Ange Postecoglou as coach of the first football team at Al Nasr club. And that with a contract extending for two seasons.
“Our best wishes for success to him and his staff in their journey with the Global Club.”
The move marks a swift return to the dugout for Postecoglou after spending the summer working as a television pundit during the World Cup.
Trophy success followed by difficult spells
Postecoglou arrives in Saudi Arabia with a reputation built on success at several clubs, most notably during his time at Celtic.
The Australian won five trophies in two seasons at Parkhead, including a domestic treble, before leaving for Tottenham in the summer of 2023.
His first season in North London ended with a fifth-place Premier League finish, but despite later delivering Europa League success, he was dismissed after Spurs finished 17th in the league.
A subsequent spell at Nottingham Forest proved short-lived, with Postecoglou leaving after just 39 days in charge following a run of eight matches without a win.
Despite those setbacks, Al-Nassr have turned to the 60-year-old as they seek to build on last season’s title-winning campaign.
New challenge in Saudi Arabia
Postecoglou’s arrival adds another high-profile name to the Saudi Pro League and sets up a reunion with several familiar figures.
Among his managerial rivals will be former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers, who is currently in charge of Al-Qadsiah.
The appointment also ends speculation linking Postecoglou with other vacancies, including suggestions he could emerge as a candidate to replace Steve Clarke as Scotland manager.
Instead, he has opted for a new challenge in the Middle East, where expectations will be high after Al-Nassr’s championship-winning season.
