Alex Witt has spent nearly three decades with MSNBC and MS Now. However, news has come out that she is making her exit from the network. In addition, The Weekend: Primetime is coming to an end as the network is expected to overhaul its weekend programming.
MS Now President Rebecca Kutler Shared The News Of Alex Witt’s Exit In A Staff Memo
Witt is known for hosting Alex Witt Reports, originally Weekends with Alex Witt, on weekend afternoons on MS Now. Prior to this, she hosted MSNBC Live and Morning Joe First Look.
Considered one of the network’s longest-running anchors, Witt first joined MSNBC in early 1999. Early in her career, she also worked for NBC’s Today as a field producer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network’s weekend content is getting a major overhaul. As the outlet shared, MS Now president Rebecca Kutler told staffers that Witt will leave later this year after being with the network for 27 years.
In a memo shared to staff, Kutler said that Witt previously shared “plans to conclude her tenure with the company later this year.” The post honored Witt for her “extraordinary career,” noting that she had been “[anchoring] more hours on MS NOW than any other anchor in our network’s history.”
The memo continued, “A beloved longtime member of our MS NOW family, Alex has been a continued, trusted, and steady presence for our audiences. She has covered multiple presidential and midterm election cycles, countless historic international events, and major breaking news moments across the country. … We thank Alex for her endless contributions to the network and will have more opportunities to celebrate her in the coming months.”
In addition, the network is cancelling The Weekend: Primetime. The program aired its last episode on Saturday, June 27.
In Witt’s place, Antonia Hylton will take over her slot on the network’s weekend hours near the end of the summer. Meanwhile, The Weekend: Primetime executive producer Joy Fowlin will serve as an executive producer on Hylton’s new show.
Some Staff Members From The Weekend: Primetime Will Stay On With The Network
Kutler noted, “Antonia will bring her tremendous credibility, versatility, and connection with audiences to this new role. Her work has been recognized with Peabody, Murrow, and Emmy Awards; her recent ‘Cities Under Siege’ series has been a testament to her standout reporting, and we are excited to see her continue to grow in this expanded role.”
Reportedly, MS Now plans to replace The Weekend: Primetime with taped programming and video podcasts. This includes MS Now podcast like The Best People With Nicolle Wallace and Why Is This Happening With Chris Hayes. It’s also believed that the network is trying to bolster its breaking news team.
Various figures associated with The Weekend: Primetime, such as Ayman Mohyeldin, Catherine Rampell, and Elise Jordan, will stay on with the network. According to Kutler, they will continue “to contribute across our programming and platforms.” As Kutler continued, they will still bring “their respected reporting and distinct analysis to our audiences.”
