If you’re looking for a way for your partner or college-aged kid to have Amazon Prime without paying for it, the e-commerce giant’s latest feature might solve your problems.
Named Amazon Family, the new feature allows you to share your Prime subscription with one other adult member of your household.
As Amazon explains it, the primary member (or the Family Organizer) can invite one other adult in their household to share benefits. The Family Organizer selects a single payment method to share Prime benefits, and the other adult accepts it; that’s all that needs to be done.
Touching on the payment method a bit more, the person who receives the shared benefits only sees limited payment details for that method (last 4 digits, expiry date, and billing address), along with a notification showing the total charge for any purchase made with the shared payment method.
With this new feature, members can share Prime Delivery, Exclusive deals and savings (like Prime Day), Prime Video, Amazon Luna, and DashPass.
Now, for those nervous that this will change their account, Amazon states that each adult will maintain their own order history, personalized recommendations, and account security.
In terms of cost, Amazon Family is free to set up and use. If you’re looking to subscribe to Prime to get Amazon Family set up, it is available for C$9.99/mo, or C$99/year, with a $0.99 seven-day trial (though some eligible customers can get a 39-day free trial). If you’re a post-secondary student, it is available for C$4.99/mo, or C$49/year.
Honestly, this seems like a great choice for couples looking to both have Prime, but not the same account (especially for holiday shopping). Although the one payment thing could get a little bit frustrating depending on the relationship to the Family Organizer, I think it won’t be too much of a bother for spouses.
