Amazon announced that it filed an application with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch a new Leo satellite constellation that will provide direct-to-device satellite service for talk, text, data, and emergency services.
If this application is approved, Amazon will begin deploying the new constellation of 5,105 satellites in 2028. Further competing with Starlink, the company has said it will work with carriers to offer the service.
A few months back, Amazon acquired and will merge with satellite internet provider Globalstar, which provides Apple’s SOS services.
Now, Amazon has added that there is an agreement in place with Apple to power satellite services for supported iPhone and Apple Watch models, which, outside of Emergency SOS, includes Messages, Find My, and Roadside Assistance via satellite. The company also noted that it will further collaborate with Apple on future satellite services with the expanded network.
Amazon says that the new constellation will “use part of Globalstar’s spectrum.”
This new constellation and direct-to-device service will work right alongside the broadband services that Amazon is currently planning to launch through Leo. Alongside the consumer satellite service, the service will also be used for disaster response and emergency messaging. This aligns with the company’s increased focus on disaster response, including opening a new Disaster Relief hub in Edmonton.
