Anthony Gordon says he learned Spanish as a child because he always believed he would one day play for Barcelona after completing his move from Newcastle.
The England international was unveiled by the Spanish champions on Friday after signing a contract until 2031, with the transfer understood to be worth around £70 million.
Gordon surprised many in attendance by answering several questions during his introductory press conference in fluent Spanish.

Speaking in Spanish when asked about the pressure that comes with his transfer fee, Gordon said he was ready to embrace the challenge.
“I know the history of this club and the incredible players who have worn this shirt,” he said.
“I am very excited and very proud to be here. It is a dream come true.”
The 25-year-old later explained that learning the language had been part of a long-held ambition to play for Barcelona.
“I was excited to play for Barca when I was three years old,” Gordon said.
“I wanted to speak Spanish because, as a kid, I believed I would play football for Barca.
“I had a physio in Newcastle and we spoke every day. I always told him that one day I would play for Barcelona, so I wanted to learn Spanish.”

Barcelona moved quickly to secure Gordon’s signature amid interest from several top European clubs.
The winger arrives after an impressive campaign with Newcastle, scoring 17 goals in all competitions, including 10 in 12 Champions League appearances.
In a statement announcing the signing, Barcelona highlighted Gordon’s attacking qualities and his performances against the Catalan side in Europe.
The club described him as Newcastle’s top scorer last season and one of the most effective dribblers in European football.

Gordon admitted the opportunity to play alongside some of Barcelona’s leading stars was a major attraction.
“To play with Lamine Yamal and the rest of the players is very exciting for me,” he said.
“The more quality players you have around you, the better you become.
“These players are among the best in the world and you can see why when you play against them.”
Gordon faced Barcelona in the Champions League knockout stages this season, with Newcastle drawing the first leg at St James’ Park before eventually losing heavily across the two matches.
Emotional farewell to Newcastle
The move brings an end to a successful three-and-a-half-year spell at Newcastle.
Signed from Everton in January 2023 for £45 million, Gordon made 152 appearances for the Magpies, scoring 39 goals and providing 28 assists.
He also played a key role in helping the club end its long wait for major silverware with League Cup success last season.
Newcastle paid tribute to the winger on social media following confirmation of his departure, thanking him for his contribution and wishing him success in Spain.
Gordon now heads into the World Cup as part of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad and becomes the latest English international to play abroad alongside the likes of Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Ivan Toney.
