Arsenal suffered a heartbreaking Champions League final defeat in Budapest after a penalty shootout against PSG.
Gabriel smashed the final penalty of the night over the crossbar to seal a 4-3 win on spot kicks for the French champions, who retain the title they won last season.
Kai Havertz put the Gunners ahead early on before Ousmane Dembele’s penalty took the final to extra time and then penalties.
Eberechi Eze also missed the target from the spot as Luis Enrique’s side won through.
PSG dominated the ball, having 76% of possession, but struggled to create against Mikel Arteta’s diligent and disciplined side.
Gabriel and William Saliba were immense throughout as Arsenal dropped deep and frustrated the French side after Havertz’s brilliant opener.
A loose ball broke for the former Chelsea man wide on the left and he ran in on goal.
He had Bukayo Saka for support but went for goal himself from a tight angle and smashed into the roof of the net.
Havertz also scored the winner for Chelsea in 2021 when they beat Manchester City.
The pattern was set for the second half and again PSG dominated the ball without threatening. Enrique was left scratching his head on the sidelines but got the breakthrough when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia drove into the area and went down with Cristhian Mosquera the wrong side.
Dembele thumped in the spot kick with Kvaratskhelia hitting the post via a deflection as the French side looked for a winner.
Arsenal forced the extra time, and Noni Madueke thought he should have had a penalty in extra time after tangling with Nuno Mendes but the protests were waved away.
A tense extra time period led to penalties and while the excellent David Raya saved well from Mendes, Gabriel had to score Arsenal’s fifth and slammed over the top.
Victory for Arsenal would have ensured a Premier League sweep of trophies after Aston Villa won the Europa League and Crystal Palace the Conference League.
It would also have secured a famous double for the new Premier League champions but their wait goes on, 20 years on from losing at the hands of Barcelona.
PSG are only the second side to defend the Champions League title after Real Madrid between 2016 and 2018, while Enrique now has three wins to his name.
