The Athletics outrighted first baseman Joey Meneses, according to the MLB.com transaction log. They had designated him for assignment over the weekend. Meneses has a previous career outright, which means he can decline the assignment in favor of free agency.
Meneses signed an offseason minor league deal and was selected onto the MLB roster in June. He was up and down from Triple-A Las Vegas a couple times after that, ultimately appearing in nine big league games. He went 3-20 with three walks in 25 trips to the dish. That was Meneses’ first MLB work since 2024, as he spent the ’25 season in Triple-A with the Mets. He’d played parts of three big league campaigns with the Nationals from 2022-24, struggling in the latter two seasons after an out of nowhere huge half season as a 30-year-old rookie.
Now 34, Meneses is having a nice season in Triple-A. He has 12 longballs with a .346/.396/.546 slash line across 331 plate appearances with Las Vegas. Although Meneses doesn’t walk much or have huge power for a first baseman, he has excellent contact skills and generally hits for high averages in the minors.
The A’s are getting a look at rookie infielder Tommy White at first base. They’re without Nick Kurtz due to a thumb sprain, though that’s expected to be a minor absence. Martín Gallegos of MLB.com reports that Kurtz has begun baseball activities and has a chance to return by this weekend’s series in Minnesota.
