Delhi Capitals’ assistant coach Ian Bell has openly admitted that the franchise’s inconsistent batting performances have been one of the biggest reasons behind their underwhelming campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. With the race for the playoffs entering its final stage, Bell stressed that the team has failed to create stability in the batting order, leaving them vulnerable in crunch situations throughout the season.
Delhi are currently placed eighth on the points table with just 10 points from 12 matches, a position that has significantly complicated their qualification chances. The side now finds itself in a must-win situation heading into the final phase of the tournament.
Ian Bell points out reason why DC’s campaign derailed in IPL 2026
Speaking ahead of Delhi Capitals’ crucial clash against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on May 17, Bell highlighted how the top-performing teams this season have benefited from a settled and dependable batting lineup.
According to Bell, Delhi’s repeated chopping and changing, combined with a lack of consistent performances from middle-order batters, has prevented the side from building momentum during the competition. He added that successful IPL teams are usually built around a strong batting core, something Delhi have lacked throughout the season.
“When you look at the top four teams at the moment, there is a lot of consistency in the batting line up. I think over a period of time now, not having that stability in the batting line up is something we are obviously working towards,” said Bell.

KL Rahul only positive for DC
One of the few positives for Delhi Capitals this season has been the form of KL Rahul. The experienced batter has not only scored valuable runs but has also improved his scoring rate, something that had previously attracted criticism from experts and fans alike. Bell explained that while the coaching staff has been trying to find the right combinations, the absence of dependable contributions from multiple players has hurt the team in pressure situations. He also admitted that no batter apart from opener Rahul has managed to cement his place in the playing XI through impactful performances.
Bell praised Rahul for adapting his approach and playing with greater intent in IPL 2026. However, he made it clear that the team cannot rely on one batter alone if they hope to challenge stronger sides in the competition. The former England batter stressed that Delhi desperately need other players in the lineup to take responsibility and produce consistent performances in the remaining matches.
“KL has again had a fantastic year. He has increased his strike rate, which is what a lot of people asked him to do. But we need other people to step up as well and be more consistent. I don’t think anyone quite yet has made himself undroppable by performance, and I think that’s important as well,” added Bell.
With only a couple of league matches remaining, Delhi now face enormous pressure to deliver near-perfect performances to stay alive in the playoff race. Their upcoming fixture against Rajasthan Royals could prove decisive in determining whether they remain in contention or bow out of the tournament early.
