Australia have confirmed their playing XI for the opening Test against Bangladesh, with the two-match series set to begin in Darwin on August 13. The return of Test cricket to the city after more than two decades has added extra interest to the contest, with fans eagerly anticipating a traditional red-ball battle between two sides with plenty to prove. Australia have opted for a strong combination of experience and recent additions as they begin another demanding stretch of Test cricket.

Pat Cummins confirms unchanged pace hierarchy

Australia captain Pat Cummins confirmed the playing XI on the eve of the first Test, ending speculation over the final spot in the pace attack. Josh Hazlewood has been preferred ahead of Scott Boland, meaning Australia’s first-choice fast-bowling trio will reunite for the first time since the tour of the West Indies more than a year ago.

The selection is particularly significant for Hazlewood, who has endured a lengthy spell away from international cricket. The veteran quick has not played for Australia since October last year after an injury ruled him out of the entire Ashes campaign.

Cummins himself has also had a disrupted run in Test cricket. He featured in only one Ashes Test against England and has not played for Australia since the West Indies tour. His return, alongside Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, gives Australia a formidable pace combination heading into the series.

Nathan Lyon return adds experience to attack

Nathan Lyon‘s comeback provides another major boost to Australia’s bowling unit. The experienced off-spinner saw his Ashes campaign cut short after suffering a hamstring injury in Adelaide, but he has recovered in time to feature in Darwin.

Cummins welcomed Lyon’s return, particularly after the spinner had made a major impact in Adelaide before injury intervened. Lyon was left out of two day-night Tests last year, but his ability to control the middle overs and create pressure remains a key part of Australia’s plans. With Lyon joining Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins, Australia will head into the opening Test with an attack that combines pace, experience and variety.

Familiar faces make up the batting core

There is also continuity in Australia’s batting line-up. Cameron Green and Beau Webster will occupy middle-order positions on either side of wicketkeeper Alex Carey, giving the hosts a useful blend of batting depth and all-round ability. Jake Weatherald is set to open with Travis Head, continuing a partnership that began during the Ashes. Weatherald’s inclusion gives Australia another opportunity to assess the left-hander at the top of the order.

Carey had recently indicated that he would be open to moving higher in the batting order, but Cummins has confirmed that the wicketkeeper will retain his No. 6 position. With the combinations settled, Australia now turn their attention to the opening Test in Darwin, where a disciplined Bangladesh side will look to make the most of the historic occasion.
