An environmental enforcement order has been issued against a shuttered chemical plant that converted Edmonton’s residential waste into biofuel. The order was issued because of concerns about abandoned infrastructure and lingering chemical contamination on-site. Alberta Environment and Protected Areas says the Enerkem Alberta Biofuels facility in northeast Edmonton must undertake remediation work on the plant, a biorefinery that operated for more than a decade on city-owned property. Spain’s judicial watchdog said Monday it has opened disciplinary proceedings against the judge investigating Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s wife for graft, a case putting pressure on his minority government. Judge Juan Carlos Peinado on Saturday ordered Sánchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez, to stand trial after a two-year investigation and banned her from leaving the country, deeming her a flight risk.
