Want more housing market stories from Lance Lambert’s ResiClub in your inbox? Subscribe to the ResiClub newsletter. When assessing home price momentum, ResiClub believes it’s important to monitor active listings and months of supply. If active listings start to increase rapidly as homes remain on the market for longer periods, it may indicate pricing softness or weakness. Conversely, a rapid decline in active listings beyond seasonality could suggest a market where sellers are gaining power. Since the national pandemic housing boom fizzled out in 2022, the power dynamic has slowly been shifting directionally from sellers to buyers. Of course, that shift has varied across the…
Anil Menon might have the world’s spaciest resume. After several years as a NASA flight surgeon, he became SpaceX’s medical director in 2018, where he authored research on the effects of space on the human body. In 2021, he was selected as a NASA astronaut and has spent the past several years training for his own journey to space. Along the way, he also supported his wife, Anna Menon, who traveled to space on a private mission in 2024 and was herself selected as a NASA astronaut last year. Somewhere in the margins, Menon has also served as an Air…
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney is headed to Armenia on Saturday for a visit his office says is framed around Ukraine’s defence and drumming up more trade and investment in Europe. Jean-François Ratelle, an international studies professor at the University of Ottawa who specializes in the Caucasus region, said it’s disappointing that the visit doesn’t seem to be aimed at continuing Canada’s years of advocacy for democracy and peace in Armenia. “We are witnessing a complete change of our foreign policy and what are our general interests,” Ratelle told The Canadian Press. “It’s looking for our own interests and…
Natalie Thoma scoffs at the idea of Alberta separation.“Why should Alberta be its own independent country?” she wonders, shrugging her shoulders. There are more important things to worry about, says the Calgary equipment operator, including the rising cost of living. “Paycheques are low and the cost of living keeps going up and up,” said Thoma outside the Marlborough Mall in Calgary’s northeast. She thinks Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is playing both sides of the Alberta independence debate when she says she supports a sovereign Alberta within a united Canada. Thoma wants the premier and other provincial political leaders to be “pro-Canada all the way!”“Canada’s…
OTTAWA — Canada’s initial position supporting Washington’s war in Iran shifted over the subsequent days as U.S. President Donald Trump’s objectives became more clear, Prime Minister Mark Carney told The Canadian Press. “The scale of what the objectives were, or the clarity about what the objectives were, were not there at the start and have arguably evolved over time,” Carney said in a Friday interview. On Feb. 28, the day the U.S. war on Iran began, Carney expressed unequivocal support for the action. A few days later he expressed regret that Washington did not consult the United Nations on a…
Photo courtesy: David Friederich/B.C. Lions The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have signed three American defensive linemen, including Eric Black, Antoineo Harris, and David Reese. Black has had CFL stints with the Edmonton Elks, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Ottawa Redblacks since 2024. The six-foot-four, 247-pound defender dressed for two regular-season games, both with the Elks, and recorded four defensive tackles and two special teams tackles. The native of Rochester, N.Y. played collegiately at the University at Buffalo and Stony Brook University. Harris finished his collegiate career at the University of Connecticut in 2025, recording 30 total tackles, three tackles for loss, and two…
A new Leger poll has uncovered a three-way split among Canadians on the question of whether hockey commentator Don Cherry deserves the Order of Canada: Those who think he does, those who think he doesn’t, and those who have never heard of him.The latest poll is titled Federal Government Satisfaction: Survey of Canadians, and asks about voting intentions, government performance and use of the notwithstanding clause, among other topics. But tucked away in its pages is this query: “There is currently a petition to have Don Cherry named to the Order of Canada. Do you feel Don Cherry should receive…
Figuring out which Canadian company is the oldest now that Hudson’s Bay has closed its doors is a complicated feat. Many of the country’s earliest businesses have changed hands several times, been bought by more recently established or American firms and even stopped operating before later restarting. The Hudson’s Bay Co. was founded in 1670; the businesses now in the running were formed decades later, in the 18th century. Their records tended to be less detailed, further obscuring matters. Library and Archives Canada, The Canadian Press and other researchers have turned up several contenders for the title that range from…
OTTAWA — As Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government weighs banning social media for minors, Opposition Conservatives have begun asking: Where does their own party stand on the issue? With a 140-member caucus, and a coalition teeming with libertarians, social conservatives, populists, free-speech crusaders and moderates, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has not yet weighed in on the notion, saying this week that it was an idea his team was exploring. With early discussions underway, signs point to some support among Conservatives. “It’s a good idea,” Saskatoon MP Brad Redekopp told reporters this week on Parliament Hill. Others had a similar stance.…
OTTAWA — Canada’s international trade minister says the government is looking to sign three major trade deals before the end of the year — with Mercosur, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and India. Speaking with The Canadian Press this week, International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu said Ottawa has teams of negotiators in different parts of the world almost every week. He said a team was in Brazil this past week for negotiations on a free-trade agreement with Mercosur, a South American trade bloc made up of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. He said he hopes to see that…
