The Justice Department filed suit against Virginia last week over two state laws that federal officials say unconstitutionally restrict ICE operations, warning that the state risks becoming “the next sanctuary jurisdiction, just like California.” The lawsuit, first reported by Fox News, targets two new Virginia laws that the DOJ says would subject masked federal agents to criminal penalties and threaten local ICE cooperation agreements. The laws, signed by Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger, are set to take effect July 1. DOJ Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division Brett Shumate said the laws mirror the tactics of other states that have…
Go’s IPO — Japan’s biggest so far this year — has done more than provide a much-needed boost to the country’s languishing listing season. It has also supplied the taxi-hailing app with the capital required to address an existential issue: Japan’s shortage of drivers. Go, which went public Tuesday, plans to use the ¥88.6 billion ($553 million) raised in its IPO to expand its robotaxi business and make acquisitions, according to a company spokesperson. “We intend to use the proceeds from the sale of newly issued shares toward investment in research and development related to robotaxis and investment in business…

OTTAWA — Canada’s national Inuit organization is calling on the federal government to be better partners, saying Canada must respect Inuit rights to governance and self-determination. Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami wrapped up a two-day Arctic sovereignty conference in Ottawa on Friday. In a statement following the summit, ITK says it firmly rejects what it calls “outdated, colonial approaches to Arctic policy that repeat Canada’s past mistakes of marginalizing” Inuit. “We call on the federal government to partner with Inuit in advancing a more ambitious vision for its Arctic territory by prioritizing improved coordination with Inuit rights holders in decision-making, and the…
A federal judge on Friday rejected former President Joe Biden’s attempt to block the Trump administration from releasing to a conservative group the recordings that Biden made with a ghostwriter. U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich found that the public interest in the material outweighed whatever privacy rights Biden had, but she effectively put her ruling on hold for up to three weeks so Biden could appeal. The recordings were obtained by special counsel Robert Hur in the course of his investigation into whether Biden improperly retained classified documents while a senator and vice president. Republicans in Congress demanded them after…
Alberta’s Opposition NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi says Premier Danielle Smith should fire her office’s executive director after he posted a social media diatribe criticizing First Nations chiefs. The senior aide, Bruce McAllister, has said instead of accusing Smith of treason over her fall separation referendum, First Nations chiefs should fix their own communities. He describes them as entrenched in poverty, drugs and violence. Nenshi says McAllister’s commentary echoes bullying behaviour from Smith and a pattern of disrespect from her United Conservatives. He says when challenged, Smith lashes out at her opponents. Nenshi says if the premier wants to send the…

After the first week of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Zócalo Fan Fest had drawn an average of about 82,400 people per day, totaling roughly 576,800 attendees, according to Canaco, Mexico’s national chamber of commerce. The Guadalajara fan fest gave tapatíos the chance to feel part of the action Thursday, as they did a week earlier at Plaza Liberación in the…

You don’t have to rely on The Discourse to know whether soccer is finally being embraced by America. Political ad spending targeted to catch World Cup viewers tells you all you need to know. Look no further than today’s Susan Collins-aligned Pine Tree Results PAC launching the next phase of a seven-figure general election ad campaign targeting Democrat Graham Platner in Maine, the latest that flickered to life statewide during the U.S. Men’s National Team World Cup match against Australia. “The first U.S. World Cup game was the most watched soccer broadcast in American history,” a GOP operative working on…
