In what has become a quintessential game of musical chairs, the Pakistan Men’s National Selection Committee has announced a heavily altered 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match home One Day International (ODI) series against Australia. Scheduled to run from May 30 to June 4 across Rawalpindi and Lahore, the high-profile team sheet brings massive talking points. Chief among them is the blockbuster return of batting mainstay Babar Azam, juxtaposed with the headline-grabbing omission of veteran wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan.

With the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup fast approaching next year, this home assignment serves as an experimental breeding ground for team combinations. Left-arm speedster Shaheen Shah Afridi continues to captain the side, while the versatile Salman Ali Agha has been elevated to the vice-captaincy role.

Babar Azam returns as Mohammad Rizwan pays the price after squad announcement

The selection committee’s decision to drop Rizwan highlights the highly volatile, reactionary nature of Pakistan’s cricket planning. Rizwan has paid a heavy price for his recent slump in the 50-over format, having managed a meagre 58 runs across three matches during the away ODI series against Bangladesh in March. His swift axing feels incredibly brutal, especially considering his prolific form just a year prior when he was the anchor of the middle order.

In contrast, Babar completes his own cycle on the selection carousel. After being surprisingly rested or excluded for the Bangladesh tour in what many viewed as a knee-jerk reaction to a tough patch, the former captain has been recalled to reinforce a top order desperate for stability.

Rizwan’s absence, compounded by top-order batter Usman Khan being sidelined due to an ongoing illness, has forced a massive shuffle behind the stumps. The PCB has named the young Muhammad Ghazi Ghori and the uncapped Rohail Nazir as the two designated wicketkeeper-batters in the squad, signalling a distinct youth movement in the specialist role.

The 16-member contingent welcomes back an influx of frontline stars who missed the March fixtures. Alongside Babar, pace spearhead Naseem Shah, death-bowling specialist Haris Rauf, all-rounder Shadab Khan, and young spinner Sufyan Moqim have all been recalled to inject firepower back into the bowling unit.

However, structural planning continues to be plagued by injuries. Explosive opening batsman Fakhar Zaman (knee) and emerging youngster Saim Ayub (ankle) are both undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of the PCB medical panel and were unavailable for selection. Their absence opens the door for fresh blood. Uncapped prospects Daniyal and Arafat Minhas join Nazir as the three fresh faces who could potentially earn their maiden ODI caps.

The upcoming games mark Australia’s first bilateral ODI tour of Pakistan since 2022, when the hosts clinched a memorable 2-1 series victory. Armed with new head coach Mike Hesson, the Pakistani squad will assemble in Islamabad to kick off their preparatory camp, while the visiting Australians land on May 23. Facing a formidable Australian outfit, this high-stakes series will test whether Pakistan’s new-look squad can replicate their recent 3-0 T20I clean sweep over the Aussies or if the structural turbulence will cost them.
